Woah. I have to say- I don't usually like the anims that I see, but this was great! Especially the lip-synch! Fantastic animation Kretin. When is your book coming out? And will it be applicable to LW8??????
Thanks for sharing :)

I really like this. The "Occupy" part is the best bit! Well Done!!!

Thanks guys :)

Floyd, my girlfriend likes that bit best too :P

Mechis, the book is coming out early next year, and is specifically for LW8. I'll be posting more info about it between now and its release.

I really like the texturing and the model detail on the frog, the environment fits really nicely,

the only thing I would have to say is that the lip sync seems a little "float", and the jump from the dock seems like the frog doesn't have any weight when he lands on the lily pad.

Other than those things it was very fun and I enjoyed the overall asthetic appeal.

I totally agree....haha...great work, Kretin! The crit about the lip synch looking a little floaty...I kind of agree, but I kind of don't. I think it looks different than what we would expect, because the character doesn't really have lips to be able to convincingly make a lot of those sounds. But I don't think it's really a major issue...overall, it's still excellent work.

I visited the site and looked at some stuff farther down the page. The QTVR of the frog is VERY nice. The transparency of the bubble under the chin is a great touch.

The fish look top notch as well, and I know CG fish!!

I'm really glad you like it, thanks for the responses :applause:

Animatethat3D, Can you explain what you mean by floaty?

The weight issue, I know exactly what you mean. I didn't want to spend too much time on the water dynamics, since this was already significantly larger than my average character test. Had this been an animation for production use I would have done more work on the water, and thus given more weight to the frog the whole time he's on the lillypad.

Floyd, thanks again :) I'm real impressed with what I've seen of BassHole, so your comments are valuable to me.

Digital Backlot, my only reference was me dancing around my house and backyard. I'm proud to say I choreographed the entire piece... I coulda been on broadway... :p

The "floaty" lips aren't bad, especially for just a character test. The mouth positions were timed well, just the definition and detail of the lip movement was minimal. There was some flapping rather than more definite syllable pronunciation.

I did not realize this was just a character test, and actually I just watched it again and I'm pretty impressed by the animation. The dance was very well done, I enjoyed it.

If you use this character in another animation, I would be very interested in seeing it. Excellent modeling detail and lighting, too, by the way. Oh yeah, and great water, too, it had a very nice feel.

Good job on this. It really picked me up from another sh***y jobless day. If I were to pick on anything, it would have to be that some of your poses need more snap. For example when he is patting himself on the chest after the "heavenly father" line. That seems like it needs a little more emphasis because of the hard emphasis on the line within the music.

Overall, very enjoyable. This animation has more character than 95% of the stuff I usually see on this website.

Animatethat3D, you're right. Thanks for the feedback...

This character, along with the others are for a direct to video series, so you'll prolly see more anims when the new one goes into production...

Thanks imamog, yeah I was a bit lazy with the second half, was running out of time :p

Thanks to everyone else that commented :)

funny one...

I didn't see the bird in the background ;)

he needs a better anticipation before jumping on the leaf...too quick and not enough exagerated...

and I'll say there are some unclear pose...

That singing frog is pretty funny, I like him. I was waiting for a bass to stick his head out of the water and start singing too!

Once again..fantastic stuff.
I agree with the floaty lips...try creating few more alternate phonetic mouth targets and alternate between the normal and new ones, just really exaggerate it. It helps having a lot of extra alt phenomes so the mouth shapes won't become predictable. Great stuff.

I would say your second half before the jump was really great...

Neat reel man! It gave me an idea, it would be great if artists who make short 3D movies like this could rent them out to cartoon networks so the networks could be cooler and promote talented artists at the same time. Has anyone tried this?

Wow, this is really nice....especially for a test. The animation is very very close to production quality. I will definitely purchasing your book.
Two thumbs up!!

I really like the fact that you want to share your knowledge. The Lightwave community is incredible. I've learned so much from the people here at CGTalk.
Thanks.

Phew, not much I can say that hasn't been added. I love all of your pond characters that you have done in the past, and this is no exception. I especially like the theme of your frog and his way of sharing it in his song. Just curious about your music. Do you have studio musicians create this for you? It seems similar to your pond bottom beast song style. Very well done. Keep inspiring us with your awesome talent. :) :)

Great work, loved it. Saw your work with the 3d ta;ling lightwave box, that rocked too. I'm from melbourne, and i use lightwave too. Good to see that in Australia we can produce such good work. Keep it up

Wow,
This is some of the best animation I've seen in forums, tv, or in the movies. You've really given life to the frog and his surroundings. Awesome work.

"....Meeeeee... occupy for freeeeee" *Bum Wiggle* "Yeeaahhh!"

*NUKE-CG falls over laughing*

I love that bit too.. his expression is priceless. and the Disco Pose at the end.. hilarious!.

I love it.

Only comments would be like.. hands higher on the jump, or add a few more motions, then you could leave the water alone, and his attempt to slow his fall should even things out.

Addictive song.... wait till you see... wait till you see.. arrghhh.. I'm humming it now as well.. :scream:

Thanks all for the comments and feedback :)

Willax, the music/songs are created by my client. This song is actually from an older video, but was great for a character test since it's a fun song and is sung by the same character/voice artist...

Jadzia, cool idea... :)

Julez, you're totally right man. As always it's a balance between complexity and time/budget. Since it's a fairly low budget production I have to keep the morph targets simple to keep the character creation costs low, as well as keeping it as fast as possible to animate. I must admit though, it's a little more obvious with a character that's "all" mouth :p

first off, i give you credit for animating in lightwave. lightwave is the burger king of animation programs. it's pretty good overall, but my only comment would be that he needs a little bit more weight to him. he seems a little floaty at times. nice job though

I like it. I like scene and shots seems be fine to me also. But one think bother me. It's his too much rigid body. He is a frog, is he? So I think he should be more flexible. Stretch him when he jump at leaf, use bigger action curves for poses and so on.

kretin
09-16-2003, 03:10 AM
Incrediblah, What makes you think Lightwave is no good for animation? Sure it may not be quite at the standard of Maya or XSI for character animation, but it's certainly a whole lot better than most other programs...

Thanks Dreamtalks... You're right, but since this was a character test rather than a production animation I didn't want to spend too much time on it...
