This is a model I'm working on, a tattoo machine.
My problem is that hypernurbs isn't appropriate for the frame as it gives strange artifacts and is all around smoothe4r than needed.
I used hypernurbs for the 2 coils and the tube assembly without incident.
So for the frame I built it using straight poly modeling, then selected the edges to bevel in edge mode and beveled them.
Which is almost right, but there's some strangeness at certain parts after the edges are beveled.
I then use the edge selection I have after the bevel with the "break phong shading" command.

What I'm wondering is if this is an intelligent way to do the bevels?
Is there a better way?

Hi,
lower the angle to 40° on the phong tag and see if that correct some errors.
an intelligent way to do the bevels?, Try a free pluging called Chamfer Maker.

If an HN makes your mesh more nurby looking then you like, try adding control lines / loop cuts to those areas. This usually fixes the problem.

You have to be careful what kinds of edges you bevel. It looks like you're trying to bevel all of them. That's why you're getting funny corners. If you were to select all of the edges on a cube and bevel them, you would get triangles at the corners. This is NOT what you want. If you instead select all of the edges of just one face of the cube and bevel, you get nice corners. Try using the loop selection command (U~L) before you bevel. It's still possible to get funny corners this way, but it's easier if you go one step at a time and check your geometry after every operation. If your edge loop contains a point with five edges, for instance, you'll get a funny spot if you bevel there. It's just the nature of the beast.

MrBook, thanks alot for telling me that.
I didn't like the results of beveling due mainly to those odd corners.
It just didn't seem right because the geometry looks messy.

I completely rebuilt the frame to have cleaner geometry to start with.
I plan to do the bevels as you suggested.
