Hey I just read in Nvidia Forum that in 400 series Geforce cards they disabled some double precision or something which is useful for Professional guys which is only there in Quadro and tesla now.

Is this true,Wont we be able use 400 series cards for Graphics Designing.

Will it be a best choice to go with GTX 285.

Hey Guys why no reply, Nobody heard anything about GTX 400 series cards or what.

Well, you can do "graphic design" with cheap integrated gpu, I would not worry about that. It is true that some of us use features from quadro cards in Maya or XSI but you can do really well with any gamers cards anyway.

Hey People Can anyone tell anything about GTX 470 About how it is for maya.....

I use a Asus Mars GTX 285 right now and I'm currently building a new system for the Octane render engine. My new system will hold 4 GTX 470 in the near future. Don't know how those cards work with Maya yet, but I can say for sure an GTX 285 works very well with Maya.

this is insane.

can you say power consumption.

1,480 Watts??

Why?

Thats my only question. I'm not afraid to be ignorant by saying 4-way SLi is the easiest way for CG artists to hate the Earth. There. Flame away at me.

That is NOT much for the power you get out of an personal supercomputer compared to 250 PCs.

The speed gain really depends on the task but ya, the power consumption of that thing's ridiculous.

It's not so much a carbon footprint as it is taking a blowtorch to all the ground within 100 metres of your feet. If a scientific institution could say "we're saving lives and energy with this thing," then it could justify it but if it's rendering a faster logo animation, why not just slap a polar bear in the face with a glove made out of rare tiger?

Nah, working machines in other industries have a far higher power consumption and don't save more lives as those little super computers.

To me the argument that "I dont waste much compared to a group/company/corporation" is meaningless. I mean firstly, are you buying the computer for yourself or for 250 people? Secondly, anything you do will be smaller when you compare it to the same person multiplied by 250. So its not a valid excuse to be using as much power as possible. Just cuz you can throw a million dollars at a problem doesnt mean you should overlook the $2 fix.

Imagine the scenario where $1 M was spent researching ink for a pen that could be used in space. When alternatively, you could write with a pencil. There is no excuse for inefficient use of resources.

Its like the 300 lbs man saying he doesnt have to work out as hard as the that fat 500 lbs man. Where you an I would say, "whats your point?"

Sorry for the rant, wasteful / excessive use is one of my pet peeves.

yeah, it's a lot of watts, but 3 or 4 standalone rendering machines would use the same power. If a quad GPU SLI setup will get your work done faster than 3 or 4 computers, then great. You'll probably save more power over the long haul if your work gets done faster and the machines don't have to run hard as long

And you're not alone by this standpoint.
It seems you're blinded by the numbers instead of seeing the benefits, just because someone said it is insane. But don't worry, you're also not alone by doing so.

It makes no sense having a supercomputer staying under the table if you only browse the internet, that would be really wastefull.
But you can do a lot more with a personal supercomputer.
Google for GPGPU and find out the benefits of this NEW fast growing technologie.
You probably end up eating your words after a research.

Hey Dude Pencils cannot be used in space because their tip gets broken all the time and it will keep floating because of zero gravity and it might cause problems for astronomers as it might go into their nose or eyes. That is why they invented a pen that works in space.

All the efforts and resources are not a waste after all.

This is just an info..... Please don't feel bad

this is insane. they did a 3d mark bench of the 4 480 cards on the evga board. they had to use liquid nitrogen to keep everything cool.
