View Full Version : Methods in which to present an exterior 3D architectural scene in real time?

Has anyone experience in doing this?

I've been exploring Blender and am planning to hopefully use this to create a game to display an exterior scene created using camera mapping techniques - so it should be fairly light in polycount.

Additionally there will be proposed structures that I will model and texture using Max. Infact I plan to use Max and Image modeler as much as possible and then use a game engine of some form to allow user to navigate in real time.

I just want to ensure that there arn't any better options out there for doing this before I invest the time into learning Blender. I've no experience with game creation, nor image resolutions, polycounts etc so this will be a fairly steep learning curve I'd imagine.

Obviously Blender is free so a good option in that respect however I've just stumbled across my first problem when testing my first game on another PC. Also my company is unlikely to be buying expensive software for this either.

I would suggest that you canvass the software marketplace, quite methodically (but quickly), to assess just what options you and your employer do have.

For example, a friend of mine is a landscape architect who does all of his work in AutoCAD. He can basically push a button and get a good-enough looking render of his work, and he tells me that he can do "fly by's" too. (I tease him and say that he hasn't flown by my house yet, and he promises to do so and to drop a potted plant in my front yard ... so it must really be good software.)

Sure, Blender could do this, but you're looking for the easiest and most-direct way to accomplish a very familiar, very routine task. "Do not do a thing already done."

The software might not be as expensive as you think. Don't forget... you are "expensive," too.
