View Full Version : Sketchbook / Sketchboard of Joshua Jacobo
jjacobo 04-13-2010, 10:59 AM I have decided to start this thread in a dual effort to chart my own progress as well as interact with and share ideas with other artists.
I will be posting my own sketches, studies, and scribbles.

This was done several months ago. This is an initial study of the pelvis from a real specimen. I create these sort-of flattened die spreads when I am trying to learn a new bit of anatomy. I tried to make the forms very simple and clear and went out of my way to show depth and to show how the different views relate.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2729/4517070959_abba120b1e_b.jpg
Here, I am tumbling the pelvis into space and trying to draw it from every conceivable angle. Once I do a diagram for an area of anatomy in the topmost image of this post I then try this sort of exercise to help ingrain the shapes into my memory. Again, a real specimen was used and the box-container was imagined.

This quick and rather messy sketch shows me trying to apply Hale's proportions to the axial skeleton.

Hi Joshua, great to see these studies; they look very solid to me. Good linework too. Keep going!

Thanks for the encouragement. I have hundreds of these shots and I'm not quite sure which should make the cut.
Hi there,
Your work looks great and very polished, to me at least. Looking forward to more.

04-13-2010, 10:10 PM
Thanks, Tasp. I wouldn't call any of this polished but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth. :)
What do you think would be interesting for others? Anatomy sketches? Compositional scribbles? Drawings?
I'm not assuming that these are finished drawings, mostly I'm was trying to say that I think your comments in the first post were un-needed. You're much farther along than myself at least, and there's no need to put your own work down, at least not if you plan to get better.
As for what to post, I think you'll find that you should post whatever you feel like. People will likely take a look no matter what you decide to put up. However the forum seems to work best if you take part in the community.

Very nice studies!
What type of wash are you using? I was curious, considering that you said some of them were done at the Getty exhibit I wondered if you were using a water pen or something. Anyway, great sketchbook, keep em coming!

@jabheur,
I am using a fountain pen and a waterbrush (a simple brush that has water inside of it). I lay down the ink and then use the waterbrush to lay down quick tone. Thank you for your encouragement!

I decided to upload a few older sketches of mine. While these are over a year old and I have improved much since this time I think they illustrate my thinking and my process pretty well especially in the incomplete areas:

Joshua! I love your sketchbook, and I hope to see more updates soon! This one really keeps me on my toes and gives me something to work towards :)
(Heh...I've noticed that a lot of my favorite artists tend to slow down a bit on the blogs and posts over the summer. I guess everyone is too busy out having fun. I don't have room to talk, in all of August I've only made 2 or 3 posts myself!)

And haven't had time to cross-post!
There is new stuff there. Thanks for the encouragement.
It's a real pitty CA is always so very slow here otherwise I'd have been more active there for sure.
I hope you'll keep posting some stuff here too :)
Beautiful studies!

Here are some lifedrawings from this week. Most of these were 2 minute poses so really I only had time for the gesture:http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4144/4969894762_5fd2ef1663_b.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4083/4969285273_0108a431c9_b.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4128/4969287477_882a672768_b.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4125/4969289397_22f150d1d7_b.jpg
This last one was a 15 minute pose and includes a correction (top left) from the master, Glen Vilppu:

Thanks for the kind words!
I should point out though that the look of the drawings is mostly determined by my process rather than any stylistic considerations. I'm getting the action, defining simple volume, working out connections, and then rendering the forms pushing the action.
This is a centuries old method used by all the old masters. It's also the process for traditional animators and comic book artist who have to work from imagination.

I did this study this evening after Michelangelo who in turn was drawing from a classical statue of venus. I tried to build it up slowly and paid particular attention to his rendering of form. The scanner makes this look more contrasty than it is in life. In life the tones are much subtler.
