I have one Nvidia Quadro FX 570 , that i think is fine for Maya 2010 (i haven't done a lot of 3d in maya but never had problems with it).

Now i want to buy a new card for games, and i think i will buy a Ati Randeon HD 5870, because new Fermi's 470 / 480 GTX are too hot , and use too much power for run. ( And i could only buy the 470 , that is worst than a 5870, if i remember)

I have a Asus P5E3 PRO as mobo, that lets me use two cards, and i have a Tacens valeo Smart 560 W as psu.

As i have read that ati is not very good for maya, i am thinking in use some free disk space i have to create a new partition and install a copy of windows 7 in it.

So have two windows 7, one for 3d design and one for games, and boot in one or the other to do 3d or play games.

I tried it , and works , i can have two windows 7 and boot each of them, in the same machine without problems.

But i have some doubts.

My Native Quadro FX 570 is better than a Ati Randeon for maya , no ?

And better that a softmodded Randeon HD 5870 to firegl ?

What worries me, is if , as my quadro has about 3 years or a bit more (since manufactured) , if it will be better to use my new ati (as randeon or Firegl softmodded), than the quadro for maya .

If for maya is better use my quadro (quite sure) , i can perhaps, as my mobo has place for two cards, install both, and disable the Quadro , when using the windows installed for games, and in the windows installed for 3D disable the Ati. (disabling it in windows not bios)

In one windows i would install the Quadro drivers , and in the other the Catalist ati drivers.

Is one possibility that i will investigate.

Also Someone said me that, i could use the Quadro card for physics in the Gaming windows , (not disabling it , and instead configure it for work as physics card), and in the windows for 3D do the same with the ati (As physics could be good for render or dynamics in some cases)

Perhaps a 560 W psu is not a lot if you are going to have two cards running in the system but i can always change the psu (well , perhaps with one only enabled at time, or using the other as physics only , the psu will have enough power)

What is quite sure is that it will be a must to have two windows 7 , one for maya and one for games,as, is quite probably that my new ati will not be better than my Quadro for maya at least ,and no if you didn't softmod it , so or i softmod it , or use the Quadro , that requires two windows , one for have gaming drivers, and the other for workstation drivers.

I have read that ati is very bad for maya , but i also have read that the 5870 have worked well with maya , at least with someone that have it. Other that have it , have said that for maya works bad .

I am confused :(

My better option is use the Quadro for Maya , and the ati for Games no ?

Perhaps experiment with softmod too , but the better way is use my Quadro no ?

It all depends what you're willing to do in Maya and what Ati card you're willing to use.
From my experiences with an Ati 4870 Maya works great without any issues when modeling & animation, working with expessions and dynamics.
I heard paint effects causes some issues with some Ati cards, but that's just related what I have heard, since I never used paint effects in Maya in deep yet. Some ppl say they noticed time freezing issues when selecting their objects with some Ati 5000 serie cards. Don't know what driver they used, but most issues can be solved in the driver settings.

I think i will buy (quite sure) a Randeon HD 5870 (perhaps the sapphire vapor-x version ). What i will do is to try it with maya , sofmodded , and not softmodded and see what happens. By the moment i am learning maya , modelling yet , and the Quadro didn't give me any problems.

I will see if the ati gives any , or not. But for games , i think i want the ati , as a nvidia GTX 480 is too expensive , and a 470 i think don't , mostly because the power need to work with , and because it is quite hot.

But i have to think if Tessellation higher performance of 470/480 worth, if i want PhysX , and i will use cuda someday.

The 470 would be the only new fermi card that is a bit cheaper and i coud buy it , but i think its performance is worse than a 5870 and a bit better than a 5850.

But perhaps , buy the 470 worth if you want better tessellation,PhysX , or use cuda, or someting that have nvidia and not ati.

I have to see more reviews and think , but in general ati have more points :).

At least i have a Quadro , so if i buy the ati , and don't work i could use the Quadro :)
