Introduction to Character Modeling in 3ds Max 2010

These series of tutorials will be a comprehensive look into the development of a character from start to finish. I'll be covering modeling, UVs, texturing, shaders, sculpting in Mudbox, displacement mapping, rigging, animation and rendering as well as using the high fidelity assets to generate in-game models which will be imported into Unity 3D and the Unreal Development Kit.

I'll be offering these tutorials in weekly installments over a period of a few months.

Part 1 - Setup
In this tutorial, I'll be covering intial scene setup for
reference photography and concept art.

Part 2 - The Eye
In this tutorial, I'll be covering how to model using strip modeling techniques.
I'll also build an eyeball, texture it and build the eye socket.

Go to http://www.2ndchancegames.com and click on tutorials to view!

The tutorials will be free until the series is complete. Once complete they will no longer be free but will be available for purchase as a complete compilation.

(considering a not too constructive post that follows)

I will EDIT AND NARRATE the final product before release.

The music is something I like to listen to while I model, I find that the more settled and relaxed I am the better. It will be removed in the final release..

ENJOY!

From what I've seen so far, I would not recommend these. First, you don't say a word during the entire thing with little more than an occasional popup (which is never up long enough to fully read and doesn't give any real useful information). Second you have some god awful music in the background which seems like it is intended to put the viewer to sleep.

As far as the modeling goes, I would not recoment projecting an image onto the model for beginners the way you did because it tends to hide flaws in the modeled geometry. It also makes it more difficult for the viewer to see what you are doing.

Seriously, if you expect people to pay for these you will have to talk. Without you explaining what you are doing and why you are doing it, there is really little need for something like this. It's just another of the many videos already available showing someone working on a model.

You may also want to speed things up, the 30 minute video is extremely underwhelming in both the amount of information shared and the final results. Considering that a 30 second serch on youtube brings up tons of tutorials, many of them with people actually explaining what they are doing, I would be surprised if anyone paid for this.

As it is now, it seems more like you are trying to make some money by recording yourself modelign something for your game.

Wow, yet again someone on this forum leaves me speechless.

Wow, you managed to slam my intentions, my talent and my taste in music in one tidy little paragraph.

I see from your "Lord of the Posts" title, you must know everything.

Did the concept of FREE somehow escape you? You know I didn't have to share a damn thing and when I do yet another jerk on this forum criticizes someone who's trying to offer something to the community. Where's your portfolio and website? Ah I see you have none, you must be a no-talent hack like most of the "Lord of the Posts" are here. Experts on everything and mean spirited.

My favorite of your posts begins with "I don't want to sound mean but...." Classic.

Did it ever enter into your head that the final tutorial compilation will have narration and be edited? You are slamming a product which is MONTHS away from final release.

Why must you be so critical without offering any recommendations? From your previous posts I see you have a history of being hyper-critical without offering a shred of constructive criticism.

Think before you speak, no wait, you did not.

Oh yeah, YOU'RE WELCOME.

Jerk.

Wow, take it easy man. Instead of getting so angry try and understand Sbowling's critique. if you really read what he's saying, you'll notice that he was far from being a jerk. His assessment was very concise and to the point and doesn't sugar coat anything. in the end isn't that what we ALL want in order to grow..........as artist AND and instructors. If you're going to teach, you're going to have to grow a thicker skin.

Here's a suggestion when preparing to create a tutorial, create a lesson plan and use that as your guide for the tutorial. Just because you know how to do something doesn't automatically make you qualified to teach it to someone else.
You have to consider best practices for everything you want to teach.......especially if you want people to eventually pay for your training. Otherwise your tutorials will always fall short of your goal, which is to educate learners. ATM, your videos really are nothing more than a modeling recording session. That is NOT the way to effectively teach. You not only have to explain WHAT you're doing but WHY as well.

My advice for you is continue making the video series, but use it a learning exercise for you to become a better instructor.
Then offer it for FREE and welcome any and ALL feedback you get with enthusiasm and more importantly with a positive attitude. There are a lot of people who will be willing to help you become a better instructor, if they know their efforts won't be rewarded with the same over reaction you just had earlier.

Over time, when you become a better instructor, you start charging for your tutorials and people will be willing to buy them....confident that they will be a worthwhile investment in their CG education.

You need to chill out man. He makes a lot valid points. Take the critique for what it is. I agree that there is no need to try and sell these tutorials. As is, I found it boring and there are 101 easier ways to model and texture an eye.

I don't know...Maybe it'll be better when you add the voice over.
