View Full Version : Houdini and CUDA?
Diancoff 04-11-2010, 11:02 AM Hello everyone,
I'm going to buy a new PC soon and I'm not sure if it's worth it to invest some good money in a powerful GPU, something better than GT250 for example. I'd really like to benefit from CUDA apps but I'm not sure if there are ANY cuda apps out there useful with houdini.
So my question is - are there any useful tools/workflows for houdini, using the CUDA API?

Hey,
As far as I know, there is no commercial CUDA plugins for Houdini.
Current relase uses some GPU power in COPs and thats all. Rumors says that upcoming next version will have big speed improvements, but I don't know will this be caused by using CUDA/GPU computation or just because of code optimizations.
Keep your fingers crossed :)
Cheers.

As far as I know CUDA is not used in Houdini and there aren't any plans to do so. If anything I would imagine OpenCL would be the choice since its not vendor hardware specific like CUDA is. Though a higher performance graphics card is useful for more than just CUDA. Cheers!

Thanks for the answers.
And what about external tools that could be implemented in your workflow? For example, I know there are many CUDA tools for fluid/particle simulation. Does anyone know if any of those tools allow exporting the solved geometry?
There must be something useful with houdini :)

Almost anything is possible with enough effort. Though I don't know of anything out of the box that uses CUDA and interfaces with Houdini. If you find something let me know.
