mike_sul1 09-09-2003, 01:02 PM how do i create a realistic , rendering of sparkling diamonds with full refraction and all .. and i am not really software specific .. pls .. any sw would do .. most imp. issue is the technique .. just for info i use max5 & vray thanks

I've never tried getting the exact look of a diamond before, but this link might lead you in the right direction:
Realistic Jewelry Tutorial (http://kezan.onnovanbraam.com/tutorials.htm)
Other than that, you could just buy Brazil for the tutorial they include with it ;)

If you plan to render a physically correct diamond, I vould sugesst to try a renderer with dispersion capeabilities. Final Render Stage 1 (www.finalrender.com (http://www.finalrender.com)) or Brazil (www.splutterfish.com (http://www.splutterfish.com) ) are two renderers with that feature.
Another way (other than the tutorial mentioned above) is to get some map plugin simulating normal dependent spectral effects...
This is the key to the colourfull look of diamonds....

Make sure you get the IOR right, it should be 2.419 for diamond. And it's possible (though a little slow) to get dispersion effects in Vray and even in scanline. Just use a blend material to mix between three or more refractive materials, give each one a different colour to refract, and give each a slightly different IOR.

you can sort of do dispersion manually if you want by rendering your diamond out three times, each time with a different IOR
then pull one channel (rgb) from each render and put em together into one, the ior differences should give you the diamond 'fire'
at least i _think_ that's how it worked, there was a tut on it floating about a few years back, before any of the renderers did it automatically i think

This is what Panic was referring to...

so mike, how did u go? I am currently doing a diamond, and am using Max and Vray. do u have any files i could dig through? If not, could u take me through some of the steps involved in creating it? Especially, what lighting setup, and what material. Did u use a vray material? How did u get the refractions to work?
Again, if anyone else has some suggestions?
Cheers
