hi,

i'm using a surface shader to attain glow for some of my turbines. everything looks good as long as the faces look towards the camera, like this:

But as soon as the camera doesn't face them, they don't glow. Here's an example:

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/7682/glow2a.jpg (http://img402.imageshack.us/i/glow2a.jpg/)

Why is this? Is there another usual way to get a glow shader? The same problem appears when I use a Blinn shader instead of a Surface shader and use the Glow effect of the blinn.

I am using Maya 2009 and render with Mental Ray

For something to glow the object that's glowing has to be visible to the camera either directly or in a reflection/refraction. What you could do is create an object coming out of the turbine and check the "hide source" button on the shader.
