I'm trying to populate a few mountains with pine trees but no matter what settings or variable density filters or altitude adjustments I use, they are still appearing in rows or distributed far too evenly to look natural.

also my trees and terrains are coming in very small and always have to be scaled up.

Does anyone know of why this is happening and what I can do about it?

using Vue 8
procedural terrain 256m x 47.74m x 256m
young fir trees
overall density = 74, decay near objects = off, placement/Force Regular Alignment = off, Variable density = on

What function is driving your variable density? That would be the 1st place I'd look, 2nd -- remmber to double check that you dont have the 'enforce regular distributuion' checkbox marked -- its by the quality sampling slider.

Good luck & Please let us know whaat you discover.

Ok, I finally figured it out.
Common sense really,..I added a second type of tree (there are never just one type of trees in a forest anyway).
Put in regular "Fir Tree" at presence of .05 , left the "Young Fir Tree" at presence of 1.0,... and that did the trick.

Doooh!

Thanks for replying. :thumbsup:
