View Full Version : new rig recommendation
pigwater 04-08-2010, 05:56 PM Hey all,
I need suggestions for a workstation for work.
Budget - up to $4200
Relevant Software - Rhino, Modo, Zbrush, NextEngine
Uses - 3D Scanning, .obj Manipulation/Creation, Outputting .stl
Currently - Intel Dual Core 3 Ghz with 4 Gigs RAM
I routinely have to work with large .obj (1-3 Million) that just choke in Modo and Rhino
thanks

The problem isn't your rig - it's the programs you're using that are bad at dealing with larger meshes (ZBrush being the exception there). modo and Rhino are the culprits. Maya is much better at dealing with meshes of that size:

Cinema 4D is far worse.

hmmm .. that's pretty interesting
ok - so time to look at Maya then i guess

Still though, this is for work and they want to upgrade us, and i need to come up with a system.
I'm reading through old threads to find something that fits.
Thanks for any feedback, it's appreciated.

When you say "choke", im assuming you mean the viewport comes to a crawl, right?
You didnt mention what type of graphics card you're running, so its hard to say what you need.

Must disagree here.
I'm working right now in C4D with an high-poly mesh (2 mio. polys) character (exported from zbrush). Importing a 20mio. poly mesh is also no problem, but surely it has a hugh impact to the viewport speed, same as Max and Maya is dealing with those high-poly meshes.
Cinema 4D is far worse.
Increasing system RAM and upgrading your gfx card would probably help out.
Make sure you're using the 64-bit version of your applications, so you would be able to make use of more RAM above 3GB.

Vilandra - yah, "choke" - non responsive, clunky, slows to a crawl and then under/over compensates on move, rotate etc.
just today, it took Rhino 5 minutes to open a 1.5 M poly .obj - ( i'll attribute that to cgbeige's commet re: Rhino), then when open it chokes.

Re: Graphics Card - GeForce 8600 GT ( sorry bout that omission )
I'm running XP 32bit
