View Full Version : Small question
Trickster 09-09-2003, 01:56 AM hello... er... i was wondering about digital colouring. i know it seems a rubbish question but...
when you colour your picture let's say a anime character, you clean the lines up and you add colour to the background and stuff.
how do you do the skin colour and shading? meaning... do you work from dark and build up to light or the other way, build down??
cos i tried both ways and either of them works for me! could anyone give me hints!

I tend to rough the darks, then rough the lights. After that, it's just a matter of fancy for smoothing and blending.

Start with a base colour, in this case brown.
Grabbed a dark shade of red and some black, and slapped it on real quick & sloppy like.
There, the darks are now roughed in.

What I am trying to improve now is the sense of "value". Loomis, Seegmiller, Lemen, etc... consider it as the main parameter of any picture.
It is true. After watching carefully at the digital art forums what isolates the "masterworks" from the so-so ones, it is definitely value. The ability to create contrast and maintain simplicity is something I lack of and wish to learn.
So, now I try to work creating first 3 or 4 main values of the colours I wish to keep in my pic. Then start to add shadows trying to maintain the weight of the values (if I paint a white shirt and a blue trouser, the shadows of the shirt will be much lighter than the shadow of the trousers).
After that highlights and refining.
At the end all that's remaining is wondering: how on the earth does Seegmiller to make it look so easy when I am not able to create a single stroke that seems right?
I am a newbie too, so cannot explaint too much more...

I moved this thread here because it's a general question about art technique--not about Painter specifically. You'd get more responses in here too.
