I'm working on the head of a new critter in polys and would like to start adding details in the nose and around the eyes and ears. I'm used to using the smooth tool but I realize that makes things start going slow real fast.

So my question is... Should I smooth the model then further manipulate it, or is there a better way? Possibly a way to keep my low-res model and use it to animate the high res?

I had thought about something like smooth proxy but that won't let me add onto the high res.

Hope I explained things enough. Appreciate any advice you guys can give.

Thanks,
Dan

Since I haven't seen your model I can't determin if it's to densed or not. One reason why your scenfile is getting heavy to work with could be a massiv history. Select your mesh and go to 'edit' menu. 'Select delete by type', and the in the submenu 'history'.

This should speed up things quite alot.

I wouldn't aproach modeling the way you seem to do it. I prefer using the 'split polygon tool' and the 'divide polygon tool'. There's also a handy script on Highend3d that is called 'MJ Poly Tools'. Combined with the 'Connect to pollyshape' script they make a nice poly-modeling toolbox.

Try using them.

Appreciate the reply. So you don't use the smooth tool.. Just split the polys according to what's needed?
