Hi All,

I'm trying to model a mech in maya but finding it difficult to get anything looking decent. I was looking for some tips on how to get started? I'm fairly comfortable with maya, not amazingly advanced but know my way around it. I'm a terrible drawer so I am not able to sketch one before I get started much less draw up orthographic views of my design.

The style of mech I'm going for is the likes of gundam/humanoid mech (has a cockpit)

Does anyone have any general advice to give?

For a mech like that, orthographic drawings are essential for reference. If you can't draw your own, pull a reference from an existing mech.
