View Full Version : 2D - Concept Sketches for a Comic
ill_logic 09-08-2003, 06:20 PM hey all...
it's been a while since i posted anything on cgtalk. right now i'm trying to work on a comic. something with both handdrawn & 3d elements. i wanna get some friends of mine involved, if it's possible...
anyway here are some pics of the two main characters.
yuji is a 'ronin punk', a hired sword that does some stuff that's not necessarily nice. he's one of the best swordsman in a large subcontinental city owned by a large conglomerate:

kali was the victim of a very violent attack at a very young age. after it occured, she grew up in a very sheltered environment. now she is just venturing out into the real world on her own:

i know these aren't the typical concept art formats & stuff. they're more practice sketches to help get a better feel for the characters.
any thoughts/comments/opinions on them?! anything is helpful & i'd deeply appreciate it.

Great start, ill_logic!
I'm especially entranced with kali. The backstory sounds very interesting for her... That IS a false leg, right? Very cute, and they all display genuine thought, effort, and understanding that'll take you far.
That far right pic of kali kills me -- use that one!:D
Website's nice too, even though it's a mess... The 3D looked pretty damn cool to me - I dunno the technical side of things, but these look real decent, and I look forward to more of your work.

nice stuff, like the stuff in your gallery on deviant too.
Only crit would be his phsyique, the two front facing pics dont say swordsman to me, he looks like he needs better muscle definition in the upper body, looks kinda scrawny at the minute. His shape seems better balanced in the top left shot looking over his shoulder, and in the small sketch with him standing with the sword above his head. Lithe is a hard state to capture, by its nature its somewhat understated, just feel like he could do with a bit more upper body mass. (you train enough to get that good with a sword your gonna have muscle)
Love the hair on both of them btw.
anyway, there far better than i can manage either way.
keep it up

thanks sim. i understand what you're saying about the upper body. i just figured the more lanky/less muscular he looked, the less assuming his sword skills would be. plus i thought it made him look a bit quicker too. that was the rationale. but yeah, maybe he's a bit too stickly to be decent swordsman lol
thanks for the feedback

Wow, ill_logic, you either totally missed or ignored my comments.

sorry! no disrespect or anything, will... i meant to respond & probably thought i did at one point or another.
in any event, thanks for the kind words. Yes, that's a mechanical leg... a little byproduct of her 'run-in'. she usually has an ace bandage-like stocking pulled up over it, so you don't see the mech much, but i felt like adding it.
nothing on Yuji? lol oh well.
right now, i'm working on the other characters (among about 30 other things). if i like the way they turn out, i'll probably end up posting them too.
sorry about not responding

Okay, then... as long as you weren't dismissing me ;) .
Hm... yeah, I guess I didn't comment on yuji because I'm a bit sexist and don't care about the strapping young badboys. I'll have to check myself on that  .
He seems like a decent lad.
Regarding the crits about his upper body, I disagree. His muscles might be very well-defined underneath those clothes -- you can't tell about definition if someone is wearing loose-fit clothing. He looks plenty strong enough to wield a light-weight super-sharp blade.
The idea that a master swordsman needs broad shoulders and huge arms is a distorted comic-fed perception. He'd be more likely to have the build of a dancer than a body-builder because swordfighting is about movement, and being lithe allows one greater speed.
Make him just the way your instincts tell you to.

hmmmm strapping, eh? lol
that's sorta why i gave him the really baggy pants. i figure it made him look a lot more stable & balanced. but looking at him, in the one body shot on the right, he does look a little too weak in that picture, mainly because in that one the shirt isn't supposed to be all that baggy.
thanks for the comments!
