View Full Version : Automatic FG baking for rendering animation?
MCook 04-04-2010, 11:14 PM Hey there
I came across this useful tutorial for rendering FG for animation: http://www.i3dtutorials.com/tutorial/53_rendering-for-animation-with-final-gathering
However I'm curious why there isn't an automatic way of Softimage baking the FG data and then using it to render the FG pass?
So far (and as shown in the video) i always have to do it manually by rendering the FG map and wait until it's done and then select the map to render the FG pass.
Can't it just do it for all my passes automatically so i don't need to babysit that process and then go select the map for each pass?

I may not fully understand your question here. But if I am understanding you properly, then yes, it's simple. On your FG tab in Mental Ray, where it says "Map File Settings" change "overwrite existing file" to "Only use FG points from file". Then it will never try to write an FG map, and will use the one you already have, just below that, you can choose the Map manually.

That i know.
What i meant is the actual process of having to manually re-select the fg-map and set it to use map file once it was created.
If you have multiple passes or scenes this is kinda annoying task.
Why can't it just itself create the fg-map and then once finished it would utilize that map to render the animations?

there are 2 way to achieve what you are asking.
1 if you are rendering on a single machine. then get you pass all setup the way that you want it. then duplicate it. on the new "duplicate" pass set the FG map to only use points from file.
then go to the original version of the pass and then se the render type to calculate FG only.
This way the first pass writes out the map without rendering it and the second pass renders is.
2. you are rendering on a farm. you have to break the above method in to 2 separate jobs.
First job bakes the maps then second job renders the images using them.
