actually shaders and materials are the same, while one could make the distinction between having simple materials on the one hand and more complex shader networks on the other.

blinn is one of maya's built-in shader types, like phong, lambert, etc.

all of those have unique attributes regarding specular highlights, reaction towards light sources, etc.

btw, why don't you look up things like that in the manual? :shrug:

there are plenty of good explanations in there!
