I have a question regarding secondary character animation....

I'm in the middle of my demo reel and I need to start animating soon....but since I'm really tight on schedule, I was wondering if anybody has thoughts on how to make secondary clothes animation for a character that will have drapes forming a cape and it will also have belts and so on...

I've tried riggid bodies...but it's way to slow ...I've tried cloth for weeks but it craps out everytime when doing sudden moves with the character...even when increasing the oversampling to 2...and that's beyond a workable environment in maya...I've also tried softbodies with curves and ikSplines driving the clothes with a lower goal...but it still craps out sometimes...and it doesn't look like clothes....

I've seen really good clothes movement in game engines and cinematics....that don't use cloth simulators...but they never explain HOW they did it!.....

I basically need these to move in real time or at least not 1 frame per minute....and automatically ...there is got to be a way ....

If it comes down to key framing joints that drive the clothes...well I'll have to do it...but even that...if someone could point me in the right direction so I don't lose anymore time...

With all the bugs happening in Maya 5.0...XSI/Softimage and Houdini look a lot sweeter every day that passes by without solving these issues....

thanks in advance!

I'd say keyframe it. Its a pain, sure, but you dont have to worry about simulations screwing up when in funny poses, etc. Jump in and get it done, rather than stuff round trying out different methods that arent working for you.

Just remember to think in reaction to the actions already performed, rather than action itself.

The thing is, if I do keyframe it will not look loke clothes.....it will look almost like clothes ....but not quite there....so at least I know that a simulator will play it back with real physics.....I just have to find a way....I'll give it till friday ...if not...it's keyframing time....:annoyed:
