View Full Version : Free home made HDR probes available for download!
Olmirad 09-08-2003, 03:12 AM Hi all!
I'll post this message on Maya forum too - I hope i'm not violating board rules too badly, but i thought some maya users might appreciate these freebies too :)
As there are so few free hdr probes / maps available on web, i thought to make a small contribution to cg community and donate a few free probe images :) Only limitation is that you cannot use them for commercial work without my permission.
You can find four (4) hdr probes on my site. I made them while I had short summer vacation.
As topic says, no demo stuff, no tags or cripples.
Probes are in Mirror Ball format, easily converted to other format with HDRShop... File format is Radiance HDR.
Here's a small thumbnail of one of those probes:

YAY!!!!!
You are the man!
All I have to make my own probes is a Xmas ball!, and it has an "ecuator" seam that brokes all the reflections... :(

Good stuff!
I was wondering if I was ever going to see any other hdr's other than the ones on debevec. These look really good, I'm sure I'll find a use for them soon.
Cheers,

Three (3) new probes posted on my site! Have fun etc.
Here's a thumbnail set of new probes (not a link).

And here's the link again in case someone didn't find it in first message ;)
And just to remind you all, it would be nice to see what you're using these for! Post test renders, images, something... Or a link in e-mail to me. 2 people have done that so far.

Thanks a lot Olmirad!
I don't have previous experience with HDR images, but I really want to try it.
By the way, do you know a tutorial about how to create your own HDR image? So, everybody could create and share with each other. What do you think?
What kind of ball did you use to shoot? And where to find it?
Thanks a lot again.

Thanks for sharing :)
But I have tried your probes and the fact is that this is not real hdr maps since the range of yours is like a jpg map converted into a hdr picture. It's hard to explain what i mean but take your last probe for example: when i decrease the exposure the sun isn't appearing as a disc, it's only becoming grey, whereas with a real hdr picture you should have see the disc of the sun when lowering exposure. The problem is the same for your other's probes. Try to decrease the exposure on Debevec probes or others and you will see what i mean. Sorry for my poor english, I hope you see what i mean.

Kel Solaar: More like a limitation of my camera. I used full range of my camera (i.e. shortest and longest possible exposure time.). If i use 1/600 of second on a bright day in summer, it's still not fast enough to capture profile of sun as there's way too much light coming in camera and result is a glowing blob. I'd need to have faster shutter times to be able to shoot less exposed images.
These probes are made of 4-8 separate photos with varying exposure (1/20 sec - 1/600 sec or so).
Also you seem to discard the fact that reflection is shot from a reflective metal ball, it's not made of panoramic photos or shot with panorama camera. Small polishing "scratches" etc. make it probably impossible to ever see any clear sun reflection on that sphere. You can also see quite a few glows, halos, light streaks and distortions on those probes.
Besides, who's made some specifications i have to obey? If there's not enough dynamic range for you, fine. You don't have to use them if they are not good for your purposes.
Feel free to send me a better camera and better probe sphere (preferably a high precision ball bearing with chrome coating) so i can make more free probes! :)
Cheers,
Kel Solaar

Olmirad sorry i hope that you don't take bad what i' ve said. But the fact you take your photo from a reflective sphere is not a problem, I create my hdr picture with a chrome sphere too ( a gazing orb) and yes i have some distortions but it's not very important because i don't use my hdr pictures for background.
Besides, who's made some specifications i have to obey? If there's not enough dynamic range for you, fine. You don't have to use them if they are not good for your purposes.
I don't tell that you have to obey, but i think that your probe are not real probes :
for example, take your first probe and play with the exposure and see how it react, after convert your probe in a jpg file and reopen this jpg with hdrshop and see that it react as your original hdr picture. So it lack of range, and i don't think that it's a shutter speed problem because with 1/250 shutter speed i have done a lot of interior hdr probe.
Take a look at my probes if you want :Probe Gallery (http://kelsolaar.3dvf.net/Ressources/MyArt/SharedRessources/HDRI/HDRI.htm)
These probes have been made with a coolpix and a gazing orb, they are far from being perfect but these are probes with dynamic range.
Bye, hope you wil not hate me

Olmirad,
If you find your camera doesn't have a wide enough range of exposure time settings, you can use neutral density filters to dim down the further necessary stops.
What camera are you using for your probes?

I have thinks about your probes this morning and I can't see where the prbolem is coming, if you want can I have a look to the source images you have used to make one of your probes? I will try to make on with these images. You can send me at KS Email (kelsolaar@3dvf.net)
Have a nice day
