she's cute, nice sss on the ear but I think it makes it look more like opalescent glass, not really skin, IMHO.

is she going to be a ghotic girl? eheheh :) :)

can't wait to see more, good job

I like it  I think u have done a good job on the eyes, thats the part i can never get to look right.

Question - How do you get the skin to sort look transparent, phgroove refered to it as sss.

Question - How do you get the skin to sort look transparent, phgroove refered to it as sss.

Sub-Surface Scattering, in other words, the property of light to pass trough a translucent object.

Example, get a flashlight, turn it on, point the light on you fingers from behind, you should see that the light is propagating into the flesh giving your fingers a reddish glow, you could see the bones within the fingers, another example is wax, wax is translucent and you see the light passing trought it.

So, thats SSS, the way renderers simulate this phenomena!
I know my explanation is not very tech, just do a search on google and there you go!!!
:)

So in this case you see the light behind the girl's head is passing for some degrees into the ear's flesh.

Hey misu, I think your beauty is perfect for some piercings! what da ya think?? :buttrock:

Looking really good, I see some problems with the hair, but other than that, it is great.

RedFish
09-09-2003, 08:57 AM
this is looking amazing.... fantastic work so far

omniscient is right about the hair, I think that it starts up to high on the forhead, making her look a little like she is balding. you may want to adjust your mesh to give her a little better hairline.

also, this is just me but I think that she would look better asthetically if you could make her coller a little more thin, but that is just my oppinion.

Great work!

Strob
09-09-2003, 09:11 AM
Wow! Which plugin do you use for the hairs?

With this topology, I'm wondering how you will be able to create some wrinkles when you will animate her... :curious: I think that you will not be able to trace a wrinkle from the side of the nose to the side of the mouth because the mesh loop doesn't follow the right path.

For example, you can see an example of the path I'm talking about on this picture:

Thats coming along reaaaally nice.... :applause:

Tell me if i´m right, you followed references from natalie portman??

I´ll get rid of the collar, imo makes her kinda "sadistic"...hehe
The skin shading has a nice sss quality all over, but, its to desaturated and washed out...i´ll look at that..

I specially dig the hair...which reeminds me you maybe could throw some help here...i have a similar character in the works, a nice girl, and i´ve been playing with the hair shading with not so nice as yours result, i´d apreciate much if you could tell me about how did you make the shading that way...thanks
i use shag:hair, same as you i guess....

Here´s a link to an image of the head i´m talking, forget about the expresion, its just a test and i was playing around

I love it. Very realistic. I think any critique on this would just be stating personal preferences.

Her eyebrows have that tattooed look. It just looks odd on this character. I know some people have it done. But would she?

The eyes are amazing. I would love to see an image like the last one from the same angle but with her eyes looking into the camera.

Keep it up, very inspiring!

Drakaran
11-19-2003, 08:23 AM
this is one of the better heads I've seen in a while. the translucence on the ear is awesome! texture is phenominal. I'm glad you did away with the heavy vein at the temple, I was gonna suggest making it thinner as it was too heavy. you might wanna add a vein layer to your texture as there are several places like on the neck and jaw that they show through the skin better than others...

the neck is too round and I'd suggest tweaking the muscles on the side of the neck a little.

for some reason I'm seeing some poly artifacts on the ear that should be reworked as well.

The hair is really good, and I'd only suggest adding a tiny bit more in front of her left ear. eyebrows look a bit flat.

the back edge of the jaw is a little wrong in angle, the corner coming too far back. there should be more of an angle from the ear to the corner......

really awesome work! *thumbs up*

eburdeinick : i'm trying to make a realistic hair and I've lost too much time with tests ... Now this is a hair test but in the future i'll make a beauty haircut !
asylum24 : you're right ! it is a problem with the eye but i can't find a solution right now :( ... i think it's a problem with eye refraction because i don't use it !
Pillboxx : i'll change the eyebrows to look more real . thx !
Drakaran: thx for your sugestion ! really helped me !

Woodys3d

Congrats for your model, it's a really impressive work, almost perfect. But I think there are a few things you can improve.

I can see a few polys in the ear, and I thing the scatering is too high in that part, and its overilluminated. I think you are trying to do some kind of leather clothes, and I think that the texture needs more work... I don't know what you are trying to do exactly with that, but it don't look real. And finally, the hair... it's good but isn't real yet. Too much "perfect", and maybe there are few hairs in some parts (for example, in the ear part). But it's a really good aproximation for the moment. How are you doing it?? it's all a poly mesh or are you doing a lot of meshes. Can you show us a wire of the hair or/and the textures for that?? I think it will help a lot of people for other projects... And it will help me too, cause now I have to start with the hair in a character :P.

Otherwise, really good work, a very interesting thread!!

Really like how this is comming allong.

Things i would change
The eyebrows, they look like their painted on, not so much at the base but at the ends (The side of the head). try to make individual hairs stand out a little more right there

I love the bump map especially around the neck and chest, the problem i found is that she looks greasy or wet right there, turn down the spec there

I still see problems with the ears. they look low polly right now. if you've had trouble with that, using another meshsmooth just on that area might help.
nat
11-26-2003, 07:52 PM
About the eyebrows: I don't think it's really necessary to show the hair...some women remove the hair from the eyebrows and redraw them with a make up pen sooo... (like Pamela Anderson for example...)
You guys should read more female magazines :)

Perfect, Beautiful
The shirt could use some slight bump or something to give it that added real look (unless your going for a silk look), but other than that, the face is perfect.
I think the shirt gives a warmer feel then the jacket, i like it better.
are you planning for an animation, that would be so cool!

One of the best models I've seen as far as realism. The textures are great! My only crit is that the ear is slightly blocky around the edges but I can live with it. You should go ahead and post it in the finished works.

Drakaran
12-04-2003, 08:01 AM
you need to put some serious reins on that bump map, it's doing some weird effects to the skin. it's especially evident near the back of the neck under the necklace.

I like the shirt you put on her, but would suggest giving it a more pronounced velvet effect, like adding some textured spec to the cloth.

Mechis

Would you post a few details about your technique for doing the hair? I've never seen poly hair that looked this good!

How many planes did you use to make the layers for the hair? Do they all have the same textures applied? Or did you offset them somehow? Can we see larger pics of your hair texture maps?

Also, how did you "style" the hair? With so many layers, I think it's amazing that you were able to keep the layers close together like real hair, styled and they are not intersecting at all. How did you do that?

Also, have you experimented with long hair? Or hair that isn't straight?

I have just seen the final picture and this is a purely amazing work! From modelling (and creating the expression) every step is very well executed!

Magnificent work!

Thank you for sharing it with us!

Could you please post more details/pics on your skin material shader?
How did you do the eyebrows, with spline hairs?

And the eyes are fabulous! Can you give us any info please?

Man, your work is awesome... I really whish I could absorb some of your aknowledgment by just seeing the wires and the maps used in the model...

But pratically all of the images are with a broken link...
Can you please correct it for us, so we can just see how your work was done?

Thanks and CONGRATULATIONS!

Hi Misu, could you please explain how you used a hdri as your only lighting but still have a specular effect? is it through the reflectiveness of the skin material? and if so how you got it to reflect softley. I thought maybe a blurred hdri in the enviroment slot but then even the hair dosnt cause a harsh refltion on the skin anywhere either. Please help? - Could you please post a pic with all reflectiveness off.
Or if you didnt achive the specular effet through reflection how did you do it? Is it a vray thing?

Im using max and brazil and as soon as i only use a hdri for lighting i lose any specular, glossiness and specular level stop affecting the material. I can counter this by using a blurred version of the lighting hdri in the enviro slot and bumping up the reflect but then any other objects in the scene are also reflected but these arnt blurred :( - I cant just exclude these reflections either though because these objects are part of the scene and therefor should affect the specular reflections of other objects.
Hope what im saying makes some sence :)
