View Full Version : Modeling in SubDs and Speed

Hello friends,

I have a big problem with Maya Unlimited now because SubD modeling in poly-proxy mode is unbearably slow. I would like to get down to the bottom of this problem and find out why. I know there are modeling alternatives, but I want to find out how to use Maya's subDs and work fast with them.

This is the problem
1) Modeling initially is very fast starting with a subD primitive or a polygon object that is later converted to a subD object.
2) The model becomes increasingly complex but workflow switching between subd and poly-proxy mode is still fine...
3) As the model becomes a more complex subD object, and there is a need to work in poly-proxy mode, moving vertices, polys, and kind of editing becomes unbearable slow...

Attemped Solutions
1) Starting with Subd primitive - failed
2) Killing non-quad polys, making all polys quads - failed
3) Faster graphics card - From Geforce to geforce2 quadro - failed
4) Converting subd to 0 - level poly and back again - failed
5) Deleting Subd history - failed
6) Collapsing subd hierarchy - failed
7) etc...

Nothing seems to prevent the mesh from becoming unworkable.

I am using an AMD 1300Mhz/768MB RAM + Quadro 2. I know several people have encountered this problem and switched to subd emulation hacks, etc. I personally would like to resolve this because I will have the job of teaching others how to use this application in the near future. So please let me know what you guys think, and what experiences you have had working with Maya's SubD.

I had the same SLOW experience trying to edit this model in poly-proxy/polygon mode.
