View Full Version : Post-degree study in Game Art (UK)

I already hold a degree in Illustration but I'm interested in getting back into 3d, an old enthusiasm I once had. I'm interested in working in the games industry primarily focused on character modelling. I'm just cuurious as to what options are available: self-study, going back to university, or maybe some form of top-up degree for game art?
I've looked at post-graduate courses but they don't appear right considering my degree isn't already in Games. And the other courses I've seen are incredibly expensive. I did originally begin university on a Games Design course, having completed the 1st year before changing courses I might be eligible to restart from the 2nd year but, of course, I would have to pay for it myself.

Or, are there any other options available that I'm unaware of?

if you're specializing in character modeling then you need to know the ins and outs of zbrush. Lots of dvd tutorials available online geared towards char modeling for nex gen games, http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/store/category/12/ZBrush
buy a decent computer that can run zbrush. buy zbrush. buy those dvds and come back with a killer demo reel. but that's the poormans way of doing things. i'm sure someone could suggest a decent school.

Buy a computer. Buy Z-Brush. Buy video tutorials. That's hardly the poorman's route. ;)

I'm actually now thinking that the most direct route into the industry might be through doing environments and props. My priority is to get into the industry first via environments and to then work up and get into character modelling later. That's assuming character modelling and environments exist within some design hierarchy at the game studios.

But, the models in the Z-Brush link appear extremely detailed. Is that the level of skill I'm looking at having to reach? They look more like models for film.
