Hi,

am planning to make a faster and more stable system for running 3dsmax in 64 bits. Currently I use AMD processor and I had not much problem with it. So, I would like to go for again AMD and this time Phenom 955 x4 black edition seems a good choice, as per some benchmark i saw. I would like to see some advice from you regarding:

1. whether Phenom x4 955 black edition or even the standard one will be a good choice? and compared to Intel i5 what different it can have on the performance. I know i7 would be better but, i will not go for that kind of budget for now.

2. if Phenom is a good choice whats the best motherboard that will suit the config. I was thinking of MSI 790GXG65, or may be a ASUS will do better, need advice please

3. i am fond of nVidia and using it since last couple of years, whats the medium priced nVidia card I should go for this config?

Thanks in advance for your advice

Lets do it...

The AMD Phenom™ 955 II X4 is one of AMDs flagship Single-Socket processors, you wont get any better processor from AMD except for the 965 II X4. There is no hugh different compared to the i5, neither i7. Much better perfomance differences will be shown if you overclock the processor. An overclocked i7 running at 3,5-4GHz can have in improvement of 30-50% over the Phenom 955/965. By that said an i7 920 would be the best bang for the buck. But it´s really only worth to buy an i7 if you´re planing to overclock it. Otherwise you get the best bang for the buck with an AMD 955/965 II X4.

The MSI motherboard will do fine, since it supports every current AMD AM/AM2/AM3 Socket processors till 140Watts TDP. It´s a nice board, supports DDR3, triple channel, unfortunatelly it supports only CrossfireX and no SLI, but if you´re not planing to use Dual Nvidia cards, then your´re set with it.

The Geforce GTX 260 is probably the best in this class, prise- and performancewise.
Another more favorable but good alternative is the 8800GT/9800GT/GTX+ and GTX 250.

I second that advice except to shoot for a i7 930 instead of a 920 if you go the i7 route. The AMD's are very fast chips for the money, especially if you're going for stock speeds. I haven't kept up with i5's, but the AMD's seems like better deals than them from what I can tell

I haven't kept up with i5's...

They aren´t bad, they just missing some nice features, no Hyper-Threading and no Triple-Channel support with i5´s, which makes the i7´s a better choice IMO.

Hi, thanks for the information regarding the configuration. Sorry for my late reply, I was away for somedays.

@meleseDESIGN, ur explanation is great, now I will be moving towards AMD Phenom™ 955 II X4 more confidently, along with that I will probably use the MSI board as I menntioned. There are couple f Gigabyte bpard that hardware guy is telling me but am not sure about their performances. GTX 260 is a very nice card, as you you said price and performances is very attractively balanced.

@sentry66, yes i7 would be great, but its little expensive for me now. With overclocking it can beat amd 955 and even 965. I am more comfortable with AMD processsor :)

Thanks again for those information
