I still have an old version of Aura kicking around. I did the upgrade for v8 LW and therefore I've received my DFX.

Is my Aura still worth keeping around or does DFX do all that Aura could?

Hey duderender

I am no expert, but one of Aura's strengths is painting on video. To that end it has very good art type brushes that let you do just that. Aura is also a very good 2d animation program.

You can buy the paint module for DFX separately, but I can't speak from experience on that the quality or usefullness of the DFX brushes.

I would say while there is some cross over between both apps, stylistically each can achieve some very different results. I would keep them both.

I also just upgraded to LW8 to, and I am still keeping my copy of Aura DV on my computer just in case.:) In fact, I have been keeping my eye on http://www.bauhaussoftware.com/ who have taken over development of Aura and renamed it Mirage. To see what new features will make it into Mirage v.1

You can never have enough tools.

Just my 2 cents.
Thanks,

::bbc,

I haven't used Aura, and I don't know it's toolset and it's also version 1 where it is at 2.5 now?

Do you have links to examples of how it's been used? I just need to make myself aware of it's toolset, even though I won't upgrade it (not for a long time at least).

Thanks for the reply.

Hey duderender

Aura 2.5 is the latest version of Aura, but as I mentioned earlier, the stand-alone product is now called Mirage and is under new ownership/distribution.

The most high profile example of Aura in production use is Terrance Walker and his anime films (no disrespect to any other Aura/Mirage users out there. This is just an example that I am aware of).
http://www.studioartfx.com/

He uses Aura/Mirage for painting in details, creating 2d animations, and general compositing. I have a couple of his DVD's and the behind the scenes stuff breaks down his workflow indepth, including how he uses Lightwave and Aura together.

Thanks,
