View Full Version : Topology/Merged Vertices on a Robot?

I have a robot head I've modeled in poly's, and stupid me... I didn't notice that some vertices at the front of its "face" were merged until well after I had saved and quit and reloaded two days later. I have no idea how to fix this problem, other than to... well... start over. :/ We've tried to Split Faces and disconnect the edges but we couldn't delete them because they're border edges.

Also, I need to know if the topology is sufficiently "clean"? I've never gotten to the point that I modeled enough to really worry about it, but I need to learn how to keep clean topology for our upcoming XSI modeling class, and for the 3D Printer we have. (Woohoo!)

I'm sorry if this is such a hassle, I'm a newbie. :(

EDIT: Here's the bigger version:

Sorry but the screenshot is tiny. I can't recognize anything. Instead of using the attachment feature (which restricts filesize), use a freehoster or private webspace for image uploading. Maybe then I could help :)

Although I can see absolutely nothing on your thumbnail-sized screenshot: delete one half the face, fix the topology by deleting faces and recreating them (e.g. extrude edges and merge vertices) and then mirror-attach the other half again. I don't really see a problem here.

As Nyro said: upload a larger screenshot to a free hoster, then you will get more specific advice. I use imageshack (http://imageshack.us/) quite often.

My goodness, I'm sorry guys. :( When I had posted that, my uncle's ridiculously large laptop said it was at least 600 pixels wide and I believed it because his resolution is insanely high. I don't know why posting links never crossed my mind before! Here it is: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v355/Sekhimet/Jackal2.jpg

Ezekiel: I could try that but some of the faces involved have border edges, will it even let me do that? I'm posting right now from a computer without Maya but I'll try later tonight when I get to class.

I'm still not sure where the problem is. Are you talking about those 5 edges that got merged into one vertice on the x-axis? Simply use the cut poly tool and re-cut the edges, deleting the old ones (which would look "diagonal" after each re-cut). I'm probably missing the point tho.

Nyro: The merged vertices on the chin yes, but if they were JUST merged to the chin I wouldn't worry.... they're also merged to the top border edge of that band of his um... viewport?

The bands indented across the top are how it should look, instead they all all got merged and his bottom "eyes" have been split into two. Will these being border edges cause me any problems if I try to separate everything?

Select the vertex where all the edges merge to and then hit edit mesh -> detach component. Move the vertext belonging to the upper edge/eyepart away from the others, then merge the rest again. then process as described above by recutting. At least that's how I understand your problem.

Sweet! It worked! But now I seem to have run into another issue....

Basically when I was modeling this, I was following the general idea of the Helmet tutorial in the Maya help file. When I initially smoothed it, it looked fine, no issues with holes in the mesh or anything (the original smoothed is off on the far right of the image).

After going through and reworking the original hard model, everything went swell until I duplicated and smoothed the revised mesh (the one in the middle). I double checked the Vertex Face and everything is properly merged with no extra edges. :( I'm not sure what happened.

it looks like you still have lots of unmerged vertices. apply a polyMerge node and carefully increase the tolerance value until the problems vanish. also check if you didn't accidentally create faces along the yz-plane (i.e. on the inside) that make a merging along the x-axis impossible.

Forgive me if I sound completely ignorant but... I can't find the polyMergeVertex :/ I looked in Maya Help and it just seems to explain what it does, not how to do it. If it involves typing in code... well, I've never done that before to be honest, our professor hasn't touched on it in the slightest. :(

Select the vertices, then Edit Mesh -> Merge.
The resulting node is called polyMerge, that's what I was referring to. Here you can set the tolerance (distance) at which vertices are merged.

OH okay! I knew I'd seen polyMerge somewhere, always shows in the bottom bar as the result. I've been polyMerging like mad though, and still nothing.... no faces on the yz axis either, and when I change to Vertex Face everything seems clean. O_o

EDIT: Got it to work! Yay! I just had to restart Maya.

Then I fear I can't help you, because I don't really see anything else going on.

No problem, glad I could help. Give and let give, right?
