View Full Version : Naked HD docking stations any good? (ICY BOX)
DieMachinist 03-24-2010, 03:31 AM I am getting tired of managing my data in external cases and this seems like a good option for using naked HDs. Less fiddling around with screwing and unscrewing.
These type of devices any good?

I'm using one from Deltaco. I don't see a reason to get kicks out of it, no, but so far it has worked as well as one can imagine an external HD to work in the first place (comapred to LaCie for example).
A nice touch was that by connecting via eSata, I was able to switch the disk and boot to a different OS. :p
I suse one from sharkoon (actualy three of those) and i'm very happy with them. In the office i use them to backup systems or move huge amounts of data, at home i use it with my PVR.
Couldn't be happier.

My local shop has the two SATA models from Sharkoon. Not sure which to pick.....
Model A- USB3 external connection
Vs
Model B- USB2 + eSATA external connection
Ideal would have been USB3 + eSATA.

I personally prefer inside rack, faster connection then usb been directly sata2.
I have one and it's very easy to back up data and look up for stuff on external drives...
I had enough of all cables/power supplies for external disks... with the rack I do not have cables, the naked disk cost less and is faster in transfer rate....hot swap works fine with AHCI drivers under win7..

Halford: I use those as well, but the external docking stations are more flexible, especial ysince i can easily plug one into my Netbook if i need some files.

Srek: did not think about laptop...that's a point.
Hal.
Not only notebooks, i use one connected to my PVR to extend HD space on it and easily move gigabytes of recorded movies to my PC for cutting and compression.

Isn´t it risky to transport all that sensitive data so mamy times with such an high sensitive thing like an HDD?
I mean, just let it fall down only ones and you can throw your HDD somewhere.
I have it done twice allready, since that I only use memory sticks or a peer-to-peer connection via USB between my laptop and pc.
;)
I use a small padded container to move the disk. The last time i killed a drive unintentionaly was over ten years ago.
