View Full Version : NEWB Modeling/texture question
Terro 09-06-2003, 04:22 PM Ok my copy of C4D just arrived. Before I ask this question I have to make it clear that I never textured anything. All my 3d work , involved making simple models that rendered in Swift 3d as outlines and colored in Flash MX. So I never had a need to texture. But I liked the modeling and my first task in C4D is to model helmet like the one below.

My question is , do I model the whole helmet including the goggles as one object, or seperate obejects. Which way would you go about doing this ? I wil find texturing tutorials my self just want to start on the right track.
Also from what I'm seeing this UV painting sounds like it would do fine on one object. I know that I'd need Bodypaint to do it, but we do have 3dmax 5 (Wich is a pain, lol) Can I use Max to pain the object from C4D?
I may be talking out of my ass since I have never done this before, so let me hear it and do't worry about hurting Old Terros feelings. I want to learn :)
Sorry for the dumb question guys

Separate objects, definitely.

Modeling: I'd probably get the rough shape with lathe nurbs, convert to poly and use deformers, scaling and magnet tweaking to get the final shape (for the helmet). The good thing using that approach is that you get a perfect set of UV-coords automatically, so you won't have to worry about unwrapping. To make the goggle strap fit perfectly, select edgeloops around the helmet and use the "edgeloop-to-spline" function, put the splines in a loft nurbs object, convert to poly and cut/tweak it.

I guess you could use Max. I'd try using OBJ-files to transport the mesh back and forth between Cinema and Max since it usually doesn't screw up the UV's. BUT, I don't know much about Max, so take this with a pinch of salt.
Ask someone else, and they will probably have other ideas about the whole thing... :D
Good luck!
imho model the eye peice seperately and then split the required polys to make the strap.

Thanks amillion guys, now I can start without worry
lol without worry, don't get mad when it doesn't work lol.
nah dude its not the hardest looking thing but don't expect it too be a real peice of cake. Nothing in 3D ever is.

I won't get mad. I got used to projects that take 1 month to complete. Patiance is a bitz to master though , lol

Came home opened up this huge box with a huge book and 3 HUGE cd's. I then installed C4D. I CAN NOW SAVE :) Heres what I did today.

Being a total NEWB lowser I did something and not sure how I did it. I used a sphere cut in half to model this rust bucket. when I had a descent half going I welded a symmetry object tothe other half and applied a Hyper Nurb. All was fine for a sec, till Terro started expermenting and pressed some buttons not meant to be pressed. Anyhow , I somehow took my sphere the Hypernurb and the symmerty and turned em into one whole object. Wich worked out fine cause I was able to apply a new HN to get it even smother. But I'd like to know what I did cause I may want to do it again in the future, lol.
ahh welcome to the joys of the button C.
i.e make editable its the little doohicky up in the corner. C is just the hotkey
and if you need to make it smoother just click on the HN obj and up the subd value.
