View Full Version : Textureing helpers
Hi i'm relitively new to 3d animation, I made a couple models and things like that over the past year and textured them fairly roughly. What i want to know is, is there a program out there or a tool in max that will let me mark "referance points" on the model so i know exactly where the eyes are and so i can mark exactly where i want certain points to be.
It would also be nice if i could see how the texture looks on the model without having to restart max and look there.
Sorry if its a fairly "newbe" question, i just cant find what i need.

You're looking for 3d paint I think. There are some simple plugins, OK for marking, but not real texturing. Here's one.

As far as restarting max, are you talking about getting the texture to update on your model after you save it from your painting program? Max 5 automatically does this, you just have to alt-tab after saving the texture, and max will reload the texture if it is already on your model. If it doesn't there's a Reload button in the Bitmap parameters rollout of the material.

posm: Does Max5 do that with all filetypes? I was of the impression that only when you edited .psd files did Max automatically update the bitmaps?
In any case i use .psd's anyway, since you can choose which layers in the file to use for each map, which is nice since i can just use one .psd file with a ton of layers instead of having 5 different files all over the place!!

Hey, you're right... thanks for pointing this out!
It's too bad it only works with PSDs... although maybe it's just something to do with the way the psd.bmi was written?
so it will actually mark it so when i turn it into a UVW map then export it i can see where the eyes are easily and that sort of thing.
yeh max can auto-update when a picture file is changed, unfortunately my comp doesn't like to use that much memory, when i got winamp, msn, explorer, some top model in max and then i wanna put photoshop on, it doesn't like the over flow.
hmm never tried using a psd file before, i think i'll give it a shot.

For me, workflow is more like this:
1. Apply UVs to the model.
2. Export UVs to a bitmap (I mostly use Texporter).
3. Apply the bitmap to your model, using Watje's paint tool (not sure if PSD format will work, I've only used .TGA with it).
4. Paint. Use Watje's tool to save the bitmap.
5. In Photoshop, load the painted bitmap and use as a template.
Texporter...
