CGTalk - Paint Weight problem

Ive made a model with wings, made joints and everything and began to paint weight the bones. now when I try to get back to paint weight it wont show the joints in the joint list and wont let me paint, but the model still reacts to the bones.
the bones control both the model and the a few nurbs surfaces that I se for the skin of the wings

What went wrong?
