Hey everyone I hope someone can help me .I am right in the process of modeling a rope wrapped around a cylindar in maya .The only problem I am having now is how can I get the rope to be around the item in question .From the picture below you can see I have the rope ,but I just dont know how to get it to be wrapped .if i extrude it along a curve it just dont twist the way it looks in the picture so I am hoping someone has an idea.

Attach it to a motion path(create curve, select rope + shift select curve, then go to animate->motion paths->attach to motion path), and then with the rope selected create a flow path object(animate->motion paths->flow path object). This creates a lattice around your rope so that it can deform around the curve. You'll probably have to do a little tweaking with settings, like the amount of segments for the lattice, and mess with the lattice if it gives you wonky deformations in some places. Should be fairly straightforward though.

Hope this helps.

another way to do this, is place the rope (I assume it's perfectly vertical?) somewhere outside the cylinder, and apply a non linear deformer such as twist, with the deformer centered at the mid of the cylinder.

or use a bend modifier, may have to get more creative with that though.

if you need more help, I can post screens later.

I was actually able to get this right .Redkatt the only problem I had doing it the way you suggested was that it was getting deformed in a really really weird way even messing with the lattice deformer .So I just took a bit of time and rigged it with a simple fk bone structure and wrapped it by hand .A bit time consuming but it was easier in the long run .

Thanks for the help guys .
