Hey

I've been toying with the idea of workin with clay sculpting to see if I can get a new artistic look and improve my skills as an artist and especially on the area of sculpting concidering mudbox and zbrush. I was wondering exactly what do I need to know before I start with clay sculpting, what tools do I need? Any great techniques and tips and tools of the trade?

Thank ya'll for answering ;)

If you're making a stand up pose, then you need a wire base to support the clay. Also you need to spray the clay with water as you work along with it just to keep it from drying and to make it more easy to shape. There are a lot of tools for adding detail and texture to the clay model, but I don't really know what they're called. I've only done clay sculpting for class, so I don't know much about it.
Though, one of the tools we used a lot was some sort of wooden knife, like a little wooden scalpel to add detail.
Good luck with your clay sculptures!
