I got caught up in this, and I know this is a long shot, but this might save someone as there are a lot of 64bit users here...
On Saturday BitDefender (Antivirus software) issued an auto update that caused Windows 64 bit systems to start identifying large numbers of files as being infected with "Trojan.FakeAlert.5". These indentifications are false positives. The bad news is that this caused bitDefender to quarantine large numbers of files - including files in the operating system and the virus software itself.
DO * NOT * DO AN IMMEDIATE SHUTDOWN - or you may be unable to reboot as Windows may not be able to access critical system files.
Suggested course of action: switch off real time anti-virus protection, then follow BitDefender's suggested action here:
