i'd say probably the most accurate test is to get the boxes out, make sure all the manuals are in them...then put maya in one hand, max in the other...see which one feels better.

or use the search button...or

I'm not a newbie and I use max in production. The high-paying job comment is a bit silly, but depending on where one looks maya may be the dominant application that's used.

I assume your friend isn't a professional ;)

It took me around 2 days to switch to Maya (because my job required me to) and I've been using Max all the time before that.

So the moral is- use whatever you can, it doesn't make a difference as long as you have talent !

Knowing both - and knowing the differences - is your best option.

This cheat sheet from Alias is good to have:

Good luck.

I just came off of Spy Kids 3 using Maya and it paid fairly well, but it was only a 3 month gig. (BTW, those guys at the studio surf this site so I won't go into any detail ;p). Before that I was at a game company working on in-game anim, modeling, texturing..etc. And we used Maya, but it paid much lower...about half of film...but, the job is all year around. It's not often one gets laid off tho. But, film is notorious for that. Before that gig..CGI wise I was at Blur and they're Max house. And they pay equivelant to a game co. They tend to bid pretty low to get the work in.

On an average it's not so much the tools...but what industry you're in. But, if I were to be so bold...yes, I tend to believe that Maya does pay better.
