View Full Version : Can't open model 3 of 5 machines
s2a-adamk 09-05-2003, 10:19 PM Ok, don't know what I did.... been a while since I ran a network job. Max 4.26 with latest Vray plugin. 3 of 5 machines so far can't open the model. I don't think there is anything special in the scene. I cleared everything I could. Even merged into a new file - 2x - and that one don't open neither.
Ideas?
Oh - yeah - it just crashes and says "closing max due to error" - or whatever it does when it kicks out. The network deal doesn't say anything either.
Thanks,
adam

Could this be the Win2K service pack4 problem?

any chance 3 outa 5 have either win2k sp4 ?
or the hotfix for winxp that causes it ??

I was scared that might be it - but I would say no. These 3 have not been turned on in last couple of months - while the 2 that run every day open the model fine.
Is it a reverse problem? I haven't put sp4 - but I do the windows updates.....
thanks,

Sorry - win2k.
And seems to open other models just fine.
Yeah, no sp4 on these machines.

Sounds to me like you're not updating all your machines with the same plugins/scripts.
Where I used to work they created a series of batch files that would clear out a machine's plugins and scripts, then copy the approved list of plugins/scripts. That way all machines had the same exact setup, especially the version #s of things.
Might work?

sounds interesting Posm, care to elaborate on that ?

Yes - I was hoping to find out which one everybody had problems with. But I don't think that is really it either - cause it would tell me when I open the model which plug in was missing.
There might be some DLLs or something? Especially with vray getting updated every week - that is why I mentioned it. Seems there is a matlib.dll or something that gets replaced now?
But I did just re-update these today - for this reason.
And remember - not just a network issue - can't open on local copies of max either. Though I think it will merge.... which makes me think it is a render setting or wierd map - HDRI? Also using Lens Effects.
Grrrr.... why do these things always go on friday afternoon.....

The batch thing is really pretty simple. I've got a copy sitting around at home somewhere, maybe I'll dig it up.
There's a network folder where the approved plugins sit. Near it is a couple .bat files, one for people with d:\3dsmax5 and another for people with c:\3dsmax5. It deletes old local files then copies the network ones over. The updating person merely goes to the machine in question and runs the appropriate batch.

Windows 2000 Hot Fix 823980. I recommend you do install this update as it protects against some internet viruses that can infect your system even if you don't download any files. Once you have this update on the system, you will then have problems with the .max files. Just go to http://www.discreet.com/support/max/faq/answer.php3?prod=dddstudio&id=862 and download the interim fix that will fix the problem while allowing you to keep the update.
