Description: All was done in Cinema 4D using DPIT Effex for the simulation and rendering of the nuke. Used camera mapping for the backplates on 3 different geometries. 4 different grids used for ground dust, debris dust and main explosion plume. Rendertime sum was ~10 hours (7h main explosion, 1h debris, 1 1/2 hour ground dust). All was composited in After Effects. A bit short due to lack of time.

Description: Everything was done in 3DS Max with FumeFX, and composited in After Effects. The simulation is made up of 5 separate Fume grids, (3 of which are arrayed at the base for the ground dust), 1 for the stem, and 1 for the main explosion shape.
No particles were used, I used simple emitters, or used simple planes with noise maps to emit from.
Simulations took anywhere from 6 hours (base dust grids) to 18 hours (main explosion) each, and total render time was somewhere around 9-10 days. and I ended up with a 96 gig project file :p

Second: Dan Chamberlin

John does great work on these challenges and another great entry. I also liked Dan's nuke which I think is the overall best looking nuke of all the entries, but John's addition of the shock wave blast makes his entry more complete.

Samir, amazing nuke coming from C4D. Much better then nukes I've seen done in Maya which goes to show you don't need expensive software to do vfx.

Everyone else. Great job.

Alright my vote goes to...

John Paul Giancarlo: Best Simulation
Stooch: Best WIP thread

John Paul Giancarlo
I like the extra work put into the scene, ie. the plane, the building...
but I would really have liked to see the nukes interaction with the ground.
With the angle used, and I'm sure intentional. your not able to see if you got around one of the more harder parts of the challenge which was the initial blast and interaction with the ground, as well as the ending/stalling of the mushroom cloud. What I'm trying to say is, it just feels like where seeing the middle of the simulation. Always the easiest part to accomplish.

Stooch
I like the direction you tried to take this challenge ie. with the whole rig setup of the nuke and using material based shaders instead of the route everyone else took. I'm sure your going to refine your rig for future use and it's always good to have a nuke rig.
You would have gotten my vote, but I think you need to work a little more on the shading aspect, let that nuke burn a little longer and brighter, it just seems like it needs another layer somewhere.
your fire gradually turns to smoke, and the smoke should more or less, rotate around the ball of fire.

Good job to everyone.

John Paul GianCarlo -best sim- for the entries that finished on time :) Fav part was the structure destruction ;)

For the late entries:

Samir's (My vote for the time extended entries) shot was sweet but too short, didn't feel it hit its climax, left me wanting more! :D

Stooch's for most complete simulation

Jeremy's shot was real good too, explosion sim = Beautiful ;), tall buildings still standing when the rest were flattened =

Comp wise and after effects destruction..i'd have to say John Paul Giancarlo...

for Best WIP : I think its Samir Kharchi as he not only did the sim but also it was an development task for him with his cool plugin for C4d.
having trust on a new tool & getting something out of it is a big thing according to me!
heads up dude!
hope u build something for maya too in near future :)
but I would vote for "John Paul" for overall :)

for our attempt I would say We went more in relaxed way & I acted lazy as well instead of getting panic or stressed.we didnt even focus on winning but it was a great opportunity as we learned a lot from each other.
My biggest hurdle was to achieve a scale.
Initially I tried various attempt but they were all little too fast to give the illusion of giant nuke though it had some good shape.
but later on as we progressed I learned to achieve the scale of what I was after.
lowering sim scale rate was the key but it was more of trial & error as I was loosing the shape of my mushroom so I have to adjust more parameters on heat & fuel to balance the sim.
anyway I apologize to jeremy for NOT updating myself on time to time but next time we will sure hit some bars
btw I was expecting more from Fume Fx folks never mind I love what jason burger "tool2heal" has achieved.
good work fellas !

aikiman gets my nod for the best sim.

to be honest i dont like to vote on a contest that im in but i guess we need more votes.

I would have voted for JP because it is impressive, but to be honest the plane and the dropping bomb to me was a detractor since the point is simulating a nuke... anyway aikiman had the most interesting combination of detail and scale.

as far as my rig, i have to admit i kind of stopped working on it until i get my hands on maya 2011, alot of the features will be AWESOME for me as they will let me do what i have in mind already but with FAR less effort. :)

good showing everyone. nice to see the turnout.

Really awesome, it just looks great without the need for usual post-work like flare/glow, camera shake etc. Nicely integrated with an almost(?) clean plate, maybe the plate looks a bit too dark in highlights, but it just makes you focus on the subject. And the way it appears and moves is really interesting

GianCarlo had best story, hands down, and the looks we're great.

Stooch + Matix was great too, but Giancarlo gets the vote

Name: Samir Kharchi
WIP thread: Here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=139&t=852651)
Description: All was done in Cinema 4D using DPIT Effex for the simulation and rendering of the nuke. Used camera mapping for the backplates on 3 different geometries. 4 different grids used for ground dust, debris dust and main explosion plume. Rendertime sum was ~10 hours (7h main explosion, 1h debris, 1 1/2 hour ground dust). All was composited in After Effects. A bit short due to lack of time.
