Hi Everyone,

I'm starting to venture into the MotionBuilder world to complement my work in Cinema 4D XL. I've watched most of the VTMs on the 3DBuzz website and I have become quite familiar with the concept of multiple takes and processing takes to get new takes and blending takes with the MotionBlend. However, now I am debating whether to get MB 5 through the new upgrade offer, but I am having trouble grasping the concept of the Story NLE window. How does this work? I'm sure it's simple to use, but as a beginner I can't seem to get this method to work. Again, I was up and running with 4.04 fairly quickly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. MB5 seems to have incredible potential and it's something I would like to get to know.

Thanks,
-Josh

Okay. I've figured out the basics with the Story pane. But what if I don't want to use a MoCap clip? What if I want to keyframe a walk and then use this is as a new clip? How would I do this and incorporate this into the Story to blend with other clips?

Keyframed clips are just like mocap clips.
You can keyframe clips right inside of the story tool.

Hi,

Being new to animation I had the same initial anxiety about adapting to the story window after spending a couple of months with MB4 and the 3dbuzz tutorials. But I've only had 5 for a week now and I'm really digging using the story window. I still am only scratching the surface as far as its potential but it's a very powerful and ultimately easy to use tool. It's also important to realize that you can still keyframe an object on a layer as in 4. In fact certain properties require you to do so. Facial animation with the voice device for example is not currently supported in the story window and is done as in 4. (It will be supported there at a later date according to the kaydara site.)

Best of luck

Thanks guys,

I have been exploring the program late into last night, and I have to say that I am very impressed with the story window. I was blending keyframed clips with MoCap clips, etc, etc. Currently I am using Cinema 4D and I am eagerly awaiting the release of FBX plugin support for Cinema4D.

JRH,

You mentioned that facial animation cannot be done with the story window like it is done in MB4. How is facial animation done in MB5 using morphs that were created in another program? Can this be done in MB5 standard edition?

Thanks,

-Josh

Hi,

Sorry for any misinterpretation. What I meant is that facial animation using the voice device is not done through the story window. It is done the same way it was done in MB4. I've only done it using surfer dude so I don't know about import but I'm assuming the process is the same as for MB 4 as is explained on the 3d buzz tutorials for version 4.

Best of luck

JRH
