Hi Everyone,

I have been having this strange issue while making previs in 3ds max 2009, My computer slows down to a point where i can't even surf the net or type an email. When i check the task manager it shows that its only using one core and some of the memory, I am using a dual xeon , with 8 gb and windows xp. any ideas suggestion?

Does this happen with every scene? Even a simple one?

Depending on how Max creates pre-vis, it could be a video card thing as many pre-vis tests are viewport/hardware based playblasts, rather than rendered. That would line up with the idea that the rest of your computer is not being stressed.

Only suggestions, make sure all your drivers are up to date, chipset, video card, etc. The other idea would be to check your power management settings and test just once with no power management on, and see if Max still does the same thing, if it does then just put power management back immediately, if it fixes it, you have to go through one by one until you find the setting that is busting things. And if all else fails, contact Autodesk.

If there are a lot of frames or large resolution (from a 30" monitor for example), you might be running out of memory and starting to use the paging file which would slow things down like you described. I've never used Max but at least with other applications like Houdini, the frames are stored in memory to view unless you specifically store them to disk. Cheers!

hey that might be the case, this screen is only 24" but thats something to look into. cheers.

would the page file be used even if the system is showing that about half the memory is free?
