Hi, I guess i'll just introduce myself for abit since i will be in this forum for a long time and eventually for my entire life. I'm a 18 years old newb and have a passion to enter the game industry....... Well... My english isn't really good hope everyone here are able to understands.

Apparently I'm a beginner and wish to know more about 3d maya, I know polygon modeling but still learning how to model a nurbs, ofcourse I'm improving but still kinda blur about how to turn to create the desire shape out using nurbs. Okay there's alot of thing i wish to know.

- Are making mass meshes (I think that's how it called or maybe vertices or polygon? but i'll call it mesh for now.) good? Will it affect the rendering? Making a 5 minutes game trailer for project, will it require less mesh?

- What's the best way to create human shape? nurb or polygon?

- Will varga hair Technique it have a great affection on rendering? (From what i had know varga hair are strands by strands) Varga hair are more recommended or doing the hair with polygon?

- How do peoples in 3d maya create cracking effect or something like, multiple rocks burst from a wall?

Sorry i think i ask too much but i really wanted to learn and become much better, all replies or help will be appreciated. :D

may just be me but id suggest you get poly modeling down first... Youtube is the best sorce for tutorials these days (free ones) and so it Gnomon (not free - but the best, in my opinion) - ofcorse there's DigitalTutors too. Get polymodeling down so u can model just about anything in polygons before even thinking about nurbs - thats the way i did it and i dont regret it!

**EDIT
I'm sorry that doesn't answer your entire question.

Do you mean building a single mesh object, or building it in separate pieces...? Game engines typically convert polygonal meshes into triangles on import (or at render time), so either way, building efficient geometry is crucial. Also, before you get too involved, five minutes of entirely CG work is a major undertaking - you should do some research and be aware of just how much work goes into production-quality work.

There is no 'best' way, but polyonal modeling work flows and pipelines are more common.

Depends entirely on what the model will be used for. If it's for a cinematic, then fur / hair effects could be a suitable solution (as well as modeling each dreadlock of hair using polygons), whereas if it's for an in-game model, you'll want to use either texture planes or normal maps to recreate the hair without exceeding your poly count.

How do peoples in 3d maya create cracking effect or something like, multiple rocks burst from a wall?

Again, depends on how the effect is going to be used, but rigid-body dynamic simulations would be ideal for this. It could be animated by hand, or achieved using a script, but dynamics handles this kind of effect really well.
