View Full Version : Little Breakdancer WIP
bobmarley 09-05-2003, 09:03 AM This is a character I've been doing on and off this summer. Let me know what you think. The texture maps are mainly just blocked in colors, and the geometry isn't done. I have a lot to tweak, I'd just like some generic comments to see if I'm going in the right direction.

This is the third time I've posted on CGTalk, and I have yet to get a response...so I'm gonna :bump and see if somebody will say something...anything...
If people want to see a bigger render or something I can upload one...or wires...or close-ups...

Hey bobmarley,
looks really good!
definetly post some wire frames and head shots. I am currently working on a human character like yours. I will use yours as a reference.
The shoes seem a little too wide.
The head looks really good from a distance.
the thumbs look too rounded. You can't see the joints.
his head looks too small for his body. that may be just me though.
The arms look great!

I just took a look at your head WIP.
some of your images have red Xs on them. I cannot see them.

Here is an update to my character...I sat on my hands for a while cause I wasn't happy with him. I changed up his shirt, and here he is...I should take the time to post wires/headshots soon...but I'm kinda lazy. BTW...the wrinkles in the wife-beater are a little over the top and I still need to make more of them...
Any and all comments will be appreciated!

hmmm, some things I would is, roll up his pants, give him some new shoes (adidas allstar, nike cortez), give him some sweatband and change his hat, giv him a trendy trucker hat or a beanie. further modeling wise, look at his hand and maybe make them a bit stronger, bigger. Give him character! also show us some of his face so we can comment. :) hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Roman...
Hands - I'm not trying to be too stylized...so his hands are actaully the right size.
Pants - I have been a breaker for a while now...and yes, some of us roll up our pant legs...but I never did...and if you saw a picture of me, you'd understand that I may have snapped a few shots of myself for reference pictures ;)
Shoes - He's wearing a pair of Adidas shoes...
Hat - Ah...the beanie...a lot of breakers wear beanies...a lot of breakers wear hats...I prefer hats...
Sweatband - I'm gonna give him an arm band prolly...just to break up symmetry...
When it comes down to it...this is kind of a breaker self portrait...so I'm kinda partial to my own sense of style...

I think what most people are saying is that the model it self is nice. No real problems to address. I, myself, think that the torso is to short or the legs are to long. Not by much, just a slight adjustment.
As far a making him more musclular or shorting his pant legs, it all depends on what you are trying to achieve. The one gents comment about giving him character was good advice.
If you want to stick with a breakdancer, then do some research and get some reference. Steriotype breakdancers in general. You want people to look at your model, and without knowing what you are using him for, say that he looks like an old-school breakdancer. Get into the era, the scene. The track-suits and fingerless gloves. Big hair, hightops and gold chains. Bugaboo sunglasses and yellow/green striped sport socks.
I think you get the picture. Regardless, I think he looks cool. I prefer the wife beater then your earlier pics although it doesn't represent breakdancing to me. Keep going with it!
Sorry for the long post. You mentioned that you never get feedback so I was just trying to drum up some.

Lowjack...thank you very much for your comments!
I should probably make it more clear that I DON'T want my character to look like a traditional breakdancer...the more modern face of breakdancing is a baggy t-shirt and baggy pants. I'm trying to capture this feel more.
More importantly, this character needs to be simple because he is being built for animation...in motion he will show his breakdancing side more than anything else...
Here are some links to the new standard of breaking atire...
bboy 1 (http://www.bboy.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=12018&papass=&sort=1&thecat=2)
bboy 2 (http://www.bboy.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=11295&papass=&sort=1&thecat=2)
bboy 3 (http://www.bboy.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=11272&papass=&sort=1&thecat=2)
Thus I want comments on the technical aspects of his appearance. Are the proportions correct...etc...
The replies thus far have been very helpful! At this point I'm thinking the hands might be a problem area...
