View Full Version : Fastest Raytracer?
zkydz 05-22-2002, 01:56 PM Ok...I'm pretty sure that MAX's raytracer can be beat. The question is, would it be VRAY or Final Render? I need quality, and speed. No time for testing the products. I need to get some input on a live job.
Thanks

Brazil is fast as hell. Much faster than MAXs native raytracer. Vray is also fast and does a nice job.

Hmmm, thanks, I'd completely forgotten about brazil. Thanks :)

From testing most of the renderers out there almost exactly for this - I'd say that the fastest there is at the moment is Vray.
It's quite frankly stupidly fast.
VRay is very fast, and the latest build (1.08.03, released yesterday) actually had an insane speed increase. People are reporting between 20% and 50% faster renders.
The VRay advanced demo should be available late tonight by the way.

Many, many thanks! :) I have to tell you, a live job is the wron time to evaluating the options. Your input here has been most invaluable.

Mental Ray is stable, flexible and capable of superb quality, but really is not in the same league as Brazil or vRay in terms of speed. In fact, when you throw (quality) global illumination into the mix, Mental can be shamefully slow:(

... and if you throw price in then you really start dancing like your standing on nails. :p
oops forgot.. dunno if the demo of Raymax is still available but it used to be one of the fastest on the block.. ok Raygun was faster but not if you value your aa etc. :)

The mentalRay connection to 3dsmax isn't as optimal as it could be. Look at the Softimage/Xsi-mR integration. That is how it SHOULD be...
I'd go with either Brazil or Vray.

Oddly, I've tried VRay since this thread was started and thogh it was a speed demon (33 seconds vs 7 minutes) i found it very harsh in it's depiction of water through a tube. The edges weren't as nice and delicate as the edges I'd gotten with MAX's standard raytracer. I have to admit that we're not talking about a huge amount of experience here. Too bad there aren't any real good presets that you can just pop in and reverse engineer for a try out.

Brazil is nice because you don't nessicarily need to convert your scene to certain render specific materials.
zkydz,
could you maybe post some images and we could try to help you.
There is also some info on http://vray.info , or you could join #vray_renderer on DALNet on IRC. Lots of helpful people there.
