View Full Version : Best software for reducing polycount [19million polys]
MisterS 03-15-2010, 10:37 AM I have Mesh Lab however this crashes when importing an OBJ created in ZBrush. Any ideas if this would be due to sytem & file size (about 350MB .obj), or whether the software is a little unstable?
Ideally I don't want to split the mesh up into separate parts prior to sculpting.
Zbrush's decimation master only works with meshes not sculpted with HD Subdivisions hence the post here and not on the ZBrush forum.

zbrush should be able to handle 19million poly... guess u just dont not have enough ram
try import to 3d max or maya?

never heard of Mesh Lab before, but i'm guessing it's a 3d animation program like all the rest. your problem is that you aren't using ZBrush correctly. sculpting apps like ZBrush and Mud Box are designed to handle millions of polys with no problem, 3d animation apps aren't made to do that. make your maps in ZBrush, then drop your sub division level down to something low and export your low poly model and your maps into Mesh Lab. at render time have Mesh Lab combine the maps with the low poly model and the result should look just like it did with millions of polys.
btw, your .obj will probably go from 350mb to 3mb.
good luck.

Zheng - I'm not going to try, I know Max on my PC won't handle that many polys.
Are you sure about ZBrush and that number of polys? I find mine falls over if I try to subdivide again after about 4 million. I've only been using it properly for a month or two though so may be a fault of my setup though think I've adjusted memory settings properly.
My plan is probably to separate my mesh into different poly groups. 4 million per part would probably be plenty. However HD is even better. Should meshlab be able to handle a 350MB .obj file?
*edit*
Phoenix - this is for 3D printing so all details will need to be modelled.

Go with zbrush first, decimation master was created to do just that, cut down unecessary geometry and keep the silhouette / details. There's even an stl exporter for zbrush to do it all in one app...you're saying it's not working or your system cant handle it?

I'm trying to work out whether I can get a high enough resolution polycount on my models to use projection master or similar to add detail to my model in ZBrush. It would be far easier to create alphas that model in max. This is for hard surface modelling.
So far my system can handle around 5 million polys in Zbrush which borders on being sufficient for the smaller parts - it may handle a little more however it won't handle another subdivision. If I decide this is sufficient then decimation master will be the way to go. However ideally I want to subdivide again which lead me to experiment with HD Subdivision, however, decimation master doesn't work with this hence the large obj file.
