Brand new Maya user here, please be nice.

I am having a bit of grief importing from Pro Engineer into Maya.

I tried my ProE Wildfire 4 parts directly into Maya 2008, but the computer said no.

I did get ProE - IGES - Maya to work, but the geometry that came in was a number of surfaces, not a "solid" or even a "group" of surfaces.

Any hints/tips on the best way to get geometry from ProE into Maya, and if the way I already found is the preferred method, how do I group/merge all the surfaces so they become one item?

And if I bring in an assembly, as in, say, a bottle and cap, how do I then tell Maya which surfaces are the bottle and which are the cap?

Any help appreciated.

You can try checking your options when exporting an .IGES from Pro/E. Perhaps there is the possibility to have Pro/E automatically try not to export a solid but quilts. I don't think Maya can handle solids but it can handle stitched surface quilts.

But perhaps if it sees a solid, it freaks out and just makes separate surfaces, which I can understand is not very pleasant. Closed quilts should preserve "parts" too as a closed quilt per part.

Hey, I found this programme called Deep Exploration made by this company called Right Hemisphere.
The program isnt that good for modelling with, but it can open just about any file. Maya, Max, Solidworks and Pro/ENGINEER 2009 files then you can save the file as an FBX or maybe even a maya file.
I think the FBX works best, you can get the FBX plugin from the autodesk site.

I just opened a solidworks file and saved it as an fbx. Every other time ive tried with IGES i always get the same problem you are having.. lots and lots of patches all unattached.

If you wanted you could send me the proe file and i could try save it as a fbx for you.

cheers
Pete
