I was wondering what the consensus was on inter penetrating pieces. One of my current projects is warmachine from the iron man franchise and as i currently have it there are places in the armor where i just dragged the geometry of one piece through another. Im going through and reworking it heavily to accomadate all my new modelling knowledge as this was my first real modelling project Now I have grown out of doing this as i learn but was wondering is there anything wrong with this as far as texturing, rigging and such

Depends on your rendering engine. Do some tests now to see if it creates a problem with shadows.

In some cases it works, for example in Half-Life 2, I spent some time examining the Doctor model, once the SDK was released and it was a mess. It worked beautifully, but things like his glasses, the geometry was jammed right through the side of his head. It didn't effect the end result one bit so far as I could tell.

I don't think there is really anything bad about doing this, but it looks slightly better if you avoid letting objects just intersect with each other.
