Quick question, I just received my Maya Learning edition. I ordered it while scouting for something to replace 3D max with. I eventualy choose C4D and am awaiting for that to be delivered. BUt.........but.. I feel tempted to boot this baby up as I get home. My question is. Is the learning edition a demo where I can't save or is this a full working product.

I dont think you can save.....maybe just the models perhaps and in a format that only PLE can open.
I skipped the whole demo thing and jumped in head first but I am afraid to give away a fully funtional demo is even out of the good graces of Alias, even for a limited time.
I do not know of PLE but I would think that renders are watermarked and saves are limited to PLE formats...

Always check the Alias site, here is what I found....

"Rendering and Image Output
You cannot render using mental ray.
You cannot render using the vector renderer.
You cannot output 16-bit rendered image formats.
Camera's film fit offset and film offset are limited to 0.
Rendering is limited to a single CPU.
Images from the following tools have been limited to 1024x768:

Software rendering output in Render View and batch mode
Hardware rendering output in Render View and batch mode
Hardware render buffer
Paint Effects canvas mode and scene mode
UV snapshot in UV texture Editor
3D Paint Tool
Mac OS X: The command line rendering utility has been renamed from "Render" to "Render5PLE" to avoid conflict with the commercial version of Maya if it is also installed on the same machine.
File Format and Data Input/Output
You cannot write standard Maya software files (.ma, .mb); only the Maya Personal Learning Edition file format (.mp) can be saved; however, you can import standard Maya software files.
Particle disk caching is not supported.
Text dump from the Blind Data Editor window is not supported
Exporting skin weight maps and character maps is not supported. "

I think the biggest thing that it lacks is no Mental Ray...

I hope you can save. Watermarks would be perfect, as I just wanted to learn it. But as in most demos , you try to model something and you can't save :( What a bummer. If they have watermarks on render out put, thats awsome. It wasn't free so hopefully the save option is there. Will let you guys know as soon as I get home from work.

The ple is fuly working and pretty damm awesome if i do say so myself. The only problem is the huuuuge watermarks but other than that you can save your models and particles ect in a .mp file which unfortunatly cannot be opened in the full working version should you decide to buy the licence. Mabye you can get aw to convert it after buying the licence, i dunno I havent looked into that aspect .

Enjoy :P

I would like a copy of the Maya Learning edition, but the Alias homepage doesn't have the download yet.

Any ideas as to where I could find it?

Yeah I had to order mine but I can't complain. It came with a Tutorial DVD that made the transition into Maya so much easier. If your switching from a different app or completely new to 3D don't download it, just buy the PLE. You'll waste hours of getting to know the UI and time is money. With the Training DVD you'll be good to go in one hour. It cost me like 25 bucks with shipping/tax.

BTW whats this perpetual license ?

On JourneyEd you can buy Maya for heaps less money if you are a student.

It used to be a year only liscence though. Now its perpetual but doesn't include upgrade discounts.

Cheers!
