I'm attempting to learn more about figure drawing. I spend the majority of my drawing time doodling from my own mind. Recently though I've been attempting to teach myself how to figure draw with the help of a friend here's what I've got so far. I'm trying to get better so critiques are welcome!l I've been checking out a few threads here on the forums that are useful and using reference from both life and photos as well as occasional museum visits. If there are any suggestions on books I'm open to them though my budget isn't the biggest right now. I have Anatomy for the Artist by Jeno Barcsay and Figure Drawing by Robert Barrett. Thanks for your time!

So I'm attempting my first in depth sketch, it's sort of freaking me out a little. This is Houdon, Jean Antoine, bust of napolean. It might be hard to see but there are very very faint blocking lines for the rest of the head. Paying attention to all these details in order to make a faithful representation is a lot to keep track of. This is what I have so far, I'm going to take a break and revisit this later today. I think the sketches I've been doing for the dojo have helped me get this far and I'm sure part of this is just my own mind getting in the way.

A little more work and I think I'm going to set this down. I'm pretty happy with what I've accomplished despite being able to see problems with it. The eyes are out of whack, that's something I will need to pay closer attention to the next time. Any comments, or critique/advice would be most welcome.

I have the same trouble keeping the proportions correct. I have found adding extra guide lines early to block in the overall shapes helps to keep things in proportion. Then slowly adding detail. I think the drawing is very good. :)
Thanks James, I appreciate the comment!
I'm off to a Life Drawing Session, I'll be posting it up when I get back.

:) Hey..ANDREW...:)
If you like creating figures from your own imagination, then the book you need the most to do it corectly, is DYNAMIC FIGURE DRAWING by Burne Hogarth..You can get it cheap on the internet...used..Well worth it...guarenteed...:)
Between that book and your life drawing ect....you should be all set..Just takes alot of daily practice and alot of keen observation, and of course the will to do both..:)
By the way, THANKS for the visit in my thread...much appreceated..:)
Keep posting..
TAKE CARE
Glenn
Thanks for the input Glenn! I checked out some of Burne Hogarth's work and it's amazing, I'm definitely going to pick up his book thank you so much for the recommendation!
Here is some work from Life Drawing Class, I'm still having issues with a few things, namely keeping a figure fully enclosed on a page- and working in the details on the longer poses. I'm still new at this though so at this point I'm mostly focusing on quantity. I'll focus on quality after I get a little more experience under my belt.

WOW Glenn,
Thank you for pointing me in that direction. I went through those drawings today and am going to go through them again and try to learn all I can!
So Picked up Burne Hogarth's "Dynamic Figure Drawing" at Glenn's suggestion (thanks again!) I also got Andrew Loomis' "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth". These have been helpful and a LOT to try to absorb. I have yet to finish either, Mr. Hogarth's book is amazing but I feel it might be beyond my reach for the moment. Instead I'm going to try and start using what I've seen and learned from Loomis' book and looking at some other artists in the forum to work on my gesture drawings. These are a few I did today. Some of them are ok, some are bad, and one of them is great! A friend of mine has told me "just keep drawing, it doesn't matter, most if it might not turn out at first but some of it will be awesome" The more I do it the more this seems to be the case. Enough talking here's some drawings.
These two were from Loomis' book. The rest of them are from reference I found on the web.

Quickies from this morning using the references on the 15minute sketchathon thread. I'm going to try to do some longer work later today. Learning how to do gestures correctly is going to take some time I think but I feel like I am slowly figuring it out through trial and error. Reading Loomis' book is helping, but I also think he's spot on by saying that at the end of it all you have to teach yourself how it works.

Siju's stuff was great to look over Glenn, thanks for the recommendation yet again! It's a strange looking at such amazing work. I'm inspired and intimidated at the same time. I'm focusing on being inspired, as that second feeling is not going to be useful to me if I want to progress. Here two sketches I did today, mostly using reference from the 15minute sketch thread. I'm going to revisit the two that were based off of Michelangelo and try to do them better.

I can see you really like figure drawing.
If you are really serious about it, you should learn how the basic blocks (cube, sphere, cone) are the foundations of figure art (all realistic art for that matter).
One of the better tuition I have received is from Glenn Vilppu:
http://www.vilppustore.com/manuals.htm
Check him out to see if you like his way of teaching.
Hey Vincent thanks for the suggestion. A friend of mine also recommended Vilppu to me as well and has a copy of his Drawing Manual. He was kind enough to offer to let me borrow it so I will be picking it up sometime tomorrow. That's going to make my drawing book collection at about 7.
About the cones/cubes/spheres- I understand the basic set up of a figure relies on these primitive shapes in my sketching today I did two figures with just those basic shapes, it was a good exercise and something I think I might start doing more of. It's a little easier for me to draw a blocked in figure with these shapes than it is to use Loomis' Mannikin Technique, at least for now.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/Picture084Custom.jpg
So I borrowed the Vilppu Drawing Manual from my friend, who was also kind enough to give me some pointers on how I should be holding my pencil as well. It seems like a great book. I've been practicing drawing interlocking spheres so far today and the results are very enjoyable. So far this book seems a little more accessible than the ones I have by Loomis or Hogarth. Both of them are amazing artists but their books seemed to be aimed at people who are farther along in their development than I currently am. Here are two pages from the sketch book today, I'll have something more detailed in while.

Nice figure drawings. What's this Loomis book all about? I've heard it mentioned a lot around here, is it worth buying, have you profitted much from it?
Good thread though, the work appears as if it's constantly improving. :)
But because this is a critique forum too, how about more facial details from your next life drawing session?
Hi Carl00,
Andrew Loomis has written a lot of figure drawing books and many people on this forum have used his works as a way to help themselves get better. I usually see people recommend "Fun With a Pencil" or "Figure Drawing For All Its Worth". I currently have "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth" and I've found it very helpful and worth the money I invested. There are very useful concepts as well as instructional tools that help you learn the curves and major muscles of the body.
Also thank you for the critique! I tend to avoid faces during my life drawing sessions. This is because I usually end up getting sucked into drawing them correctly and it makes me forget the rest of the figure. To avoid this I've been trying to just block out the basic shape of the head and put in the blocking lines for the head. I'm starting to get a little more comfortable with drawing the body and slowly getting faster so at the next session I'll try to focus on getting some more detailed faces in there. After all avoiding them is not going to make me better at drawing them!
Here are some recent sketches.
This first one contains a quickie from imagination and one from memory from Vilppu

In your last image the only thing I would recommend is adding some darker pencils to it just to bring out the features and whatnot a little more.
Carl00 thanks for the suggestion, I'll attempt that later tonight when I get home from work. Shading is still something I'm getting comfortable with. The reference pic I was using was very light in it's shading (it was a sculptuer actually in white stone). Because I took this picture with a camera you can't see what faint shading I've done so far. I'll try to darken it up and bring the features out a bit more.
Here are some sketches from today the first two are without reference, looking at them makes it very obvious I still have to draw from life a lot more before I'm ready to draw from my imagination. The second one is a concept I'm working on and playing around with a few quick blocking ideas. Last one is from reference (about 15minutes).

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/Picture106Custom.jpg
Spent a good 45minutes to an hour on shading here's what I've got. It's not great, but it's definitely an improvement, if you want to see the reference I used this is lifted from the Anatomy Lesson Series The Head. It's the Bust of Cardinal Giovanni Garzia Mellini. The more I look at it though the more I realize the ear isn't in the right place compared to the eyse. Regardless I learned a lot going back to this piece and trying to shade it better.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/Picture108Custom.jpg
Two quick sketches from today... I feel like I should spend more time on some of these. But I also think I need to get them looking better, both with the proportions and the life that's in them. Perhaps part of it is that I'm not comfortable with my shading abilities just yet.

Tasp,
Nice work in here. I think that you need to focus on three things right now:
1. Draw completely through your figures as if they were made of glass. The contour or silhouette should be a side effect of the forms that you have created. Never draw the outlines first. Try running lines over the forms in any direction and then around to the other (back side).
2. Learn the major masses of the body better: the skull, the ribcage, and the pelvis. Get your hands on a skeleton or some good anatomy books (Richet, Bridgman, Bammes, Hale) and try to get to the point where you can draw these masses accurately from any angle. Start with simple versions or mass conceptions and then refine these conceptions as you develop.
3. Study your proportions. I recommend Richet, Hale, and Loomis for this. Get to the point where you can draw the generic figure in correct proportion from various angles. It will take a lifetime to attain mastery of proportions but spending a few days hammering it home will pay off. When you draw check your proportions and fix your mistakes. Going through the constant checking will help you learn proportions whenever you draw.
I think you're doing really well and I like that each post shows progress.
JJ- Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement!
I'm in the process of learning anatomy, you can check out the studies I've been doing from an anatomy book in Levius' Anatomy Dojo Thread. It's slow going but I'm trucking along regardless.
I generally try to do a quick gesture or blocking sketch before drawing in my figures, some of these lines don't show up in the sketches I put up here because I either erase them or my camera doesn't pick them up (I don't have a scanner yet).
About drawing through my figures, I am not sure I completely understand what you are suggesting. I've occasionally used lines to bind my figures to help me understand what the angle is that I am viewing them at, or to help me see that I'm drawing a 3d and not a 2d shape, but I think you are referring to something different. If it's not too much trouble I'd appreciate a simple example of what you are talking about.
My best sketch of the day, from Michelangelo-
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/Picture114Custom.jpg
I went to a life drawing class. It was glaringly obvious that I need to work on "form" instead of outlining as JJacobo suggested. I think part of this is because the class makes me feel constantly rushed so I tend to get ahead of myself. When I've only got a few minutes to catch a pose I try to push myself farther than I should. I feel like the drawings where I'm given more time turn out better. Next class I will try to focus more on forms and avoid outlining until I've got the complete form down.

I think you shouldn't worry about outlining for now. Just work as you do, keeping that in mind, studying anatomy. Then it will change for better with time, just be patient. Keep up the good work!
Mister3d- Thanks for the encouragement and suggestion! I'm trying to learn everything I can so it does lead me to try out just about anything that is suggested to me. I've been studying anatomy and, thanks to Levius' thread, spending a lot of time drawing bones. I do feel that I'm slowly progressing and am more than willing to be patient. I've been at this for a long time but only recently have I actually gone out of my way to devote time on a consistent basis towards improvement.
On that note I'm going to a post a few drawings that I normally wouldn't. These are doodles mostly without reference. The portrait of the woman is from the Anatomy Series part 1 the head. I looked at the picture for a while and sketched out a quick gesture, then tried to progress without looking at the reference again. I consider these mostly failures, but I learned from every one of them so that's a good silver lining. I have been noticing that my gesture drawings without reference seem to be a lot more flowy than when I am drawing from life or reference and I really like that. I think I will try to capture that feeling more in the future. Anyway here they are

The skull was obviously very very wrong, I went and studied it some more before trying to draw it without reference a second time

Hey sorry to be remiss. Work has had me running around quite a bit!
Tasp, would it be possible for you to scan or photograph your work in stages? I think that this would allow other to critique your process rather than your final product.
I think that if you have the patience to do that crits can be much more helpful.
No problem at all, believe me I understand how work can keep you busy. Thanks for taking the time to check out my work again. I'm going to try and get another decent drawing done tonight and I will take pictures as I go along. At this point though, I can say that I haven't settled into a distinct routine or process beyond gesture followed by rough forms, outline then slowly details.
For example for the torso I first drew 3 lines to get me the angle of the shoulders, ribs and hips. Then a gesture of the back arms, leg/hips, then rough forms, I briefly layed in a rough little form of the scapulas so I knew where they were and attempted (read-failed) to try and put in the ribcage. Then I started to draw over those and outlined the basic forms, then slowly started shading. Shading is something I still don't fully understand, I mean I can see highlights, lowlights and know to squint etc but the physical act of it has always given me problems. For now I'm trying to find my particular style for it.
I appreciate the offer for more in depth critique and will have something up soon!
The photos I've been taking aren't getting the light base work that I do so I had to tweak them, they don't look that great but should give you a basic idea this is from Leda and the Swan.... You cant really see the lines I put in to remind me where the top and the bottom of the drawing would be, or the 3 lines of shoulder/ribcage/hips. I'm going to keep working on this in the way I've been doing but look forward to gaining insight on what I should try, or change.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/Picture136Custom.jpg
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/Picture137Custom.jpg
First shading pass the final part will take a good while longer, just some shades to help me mark out lighter and darker parts.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/Picture138Custom.jpg
And here's the final pass, I may try to push this farther as this felt like the best work I've done so far. There are still some problems. The most obvious is the arm isn't at a downward enough angle, and the fingers and toes could be better.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/Picture139Custom.jpg
Any comments/critiques/encouragement on the process appreciated.
I've been busy, and more than that, this latest drawing took me a very long time to finish. Another torso study, from Jusepe de Ribera "St. Jerome and the Angel"

I've been doing hands over in the Anatomy Dojo, here's an attempt using no reference (not even my own hands I swear!) I need to work on my shadows and lighting, but I definitely think I've been learning a lot from doing these studies.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/nrhandLarge.jpg
I've started working on creating a skull in Zbrush. The long term goal is to eventually attempt to construct an entire skeleton and then an ecorche over that.
Issues I am aware of- The zygomatic arch needs work. The teeth need to be added (as does the mandible, it will be a seperate tool). The finer detail work, like sutures, is missing because I'm trying to get the forms down first. The nose needs some serious tweaking. The inferior portion of the skull is about as rough as it comes, I will likely not do much work on the underside as it will never be seen (also why I didn't provide a picture of it).
I'm going to play around with this a little more today and then probably try to retopolize it and take another crack at it. As it stands I created this using zsketch over a basic zsphere.
Pointers/Paint overs/Critique would be greatly appreciated even at this basic stage. I only have access to reference drawings and photos at this time. Thanks for looking!
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/skullsL.jpg
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/skullsF.jpg
I made some progress on the skull, it is getting closer to a realistic representation. I couldn't resist turning up the divisions and doing a little detail work. Looking at this now I think I should probably have uploaded images in the regular red wax as it seems to be easier to read the details with that basic material. I will go back to using that mat in the future. I will also go back to the lowest subd and continue to work on the underlying structure until it gets better. Critiques more than welcome

Nice work Tasp! It seems that your construction is really strong throughout all of these posts! I pretty much agree with the crits that have already been mentioned. As far as the "form" issue that you and others have mentioned...it seems to me that you could get more out of your forms by pushing the values a bit. Lighter lights, darker darks, etc. I suppose one thing contributing to that issue is that in most of your scans, even the white of the paper (I'm assuming you're working on white paper) is closer to a mid tone grey. So your value range might be crunched a bit right out of the scanner. Anyway, cheers! Looks good!
AbuAmir- Thanks, I am putting up the final version now. I put it up on the hardcore critique forums hoping they might be able to show me what if anything was wrong with it. I haven't gotten any responses so I'm going to call it done for now and move onto other work.
Jabuhrer- Thank you for perusing my works and leaving a comment. I am using a low end digital camera to upload my sketchbook work because I do not have access to a scanner at this time so the contrast and colors are pretty far from true at this point. I do shy away from heavy contrast because I have ruined many drawings by shading incorrectly and I am unable to full erase or fix it once the damage is done. I do not have this issue in digital works as I can easily change layers or go back and fix what I've messed up. This is one of the things I am trying to improve though as I want my traditional skills to be on the same level as my digital skills.
Here is the final skull, I will start working on the atlas vertebrae and the cervical vertebrae today and tomorrow-

Hi Andrew :)
I just went through your thread again...OUTSTANDING progress
I really like these latest life drawings of yours..You are showing an understanding of the underlying structures envolved...that's what it's all about.
Have you tried Conte Crayon yet,..if not, give it a try...the reddish ones are best...great stuff.
If you can, use it in your life drawing class...Get a large pad of news print paper, the bigger the better...Stand at arms lenght from your pad of paper which should be vertical and on an easel..and high up so that you have to reach up to touch the top of the pad of paper.
Use the side of the conte crayon to block in the basic volumes of the figure...This crayon will give you a really nice interior figure shading result with a crisp outline when using the whole side of the crayon...You can also get a nice pointed line used as an accent to strengthen an area if needed, just by pressing a little harder towards the front tip of the crayon as it's held in your hand properly..like a paintbrush, where it is grasped between your first two fingers and your thumb... not held like a pen or pencil is held when you sign your name.
With your arm extended all the way out in front of you..draw from the shoulder, that is where your strenght lies, and that same strenght will appear in your drawings.
Always stand up when in life class, and at arms lenght from the pad of paper or canvas....and always step back to check out your drawing from a distance as you progress with it..You will be able to see clearer where your errors are at, when you get distance between you and the work in progress.
Work big..lifesize, or even bigger...This will eliminate the sort of shorthand faking certain areas that takes place when working small, ...and will force you to describe accurately what you are seeing...It's a way of forcing yourself to confront what you don't understand.
What I wrote above, is the first lession that I learned from and in the classroom of Burne Hogarth when he was my teacher years ago now...But that lession has always stuck with me, and still is used by me when doing traditional life drawings...It works..:)
Keep up the great progress  , and thanks also for the visit in my shetchbook..much appreceated..:)
TAKE CARE
Glenn
Glenn- Thanks for the useful information about drawing posture etc. I'm typically standing, or sitting with the pad about arm's length away either on an easel or on a horse. I have yet to try conte crayons except for one time in class when someone let me borrow theirs. I enjoyed it though and will pick some up once I run through my current batch of art supplies.
A friend of mine recently gave me a book as a gift, it was Nicolaides "The Natural Way to Draw". I have only read a little of it so far and am finding it very useful. While I am likely not going to be able to follow the lesson plans laid out in the book to the letter I am going to try and do something similar. Here are two "contour" drawings that I did today. Ideally these are supposed to be 30 minutes per drawing. But, even drawing as slowly as possible, I finished both of these at around 15 minutes each. I am going to make another attempt at this tonight and try to go even slower.
To explain these drawings- I have made these marks looking at the paper only when I started each line. This is why they look so strange, I am basically attempting to draw solely by observing the model and not my drawing. Nicolaides writes that the purpose of this type of drawing is to make you "feel" the model with your eyes and try to link your hand to your eye and that this type of drawing should be done "searchingly".
As always any comments / critiques / encouragement is very welcome

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/Picture156Large.jpg
Tried another contour drawing last night, this one I managed to stretch out to 18 minutes, still not near the 30minute mark Nicolaides suggests. I may try his suggestion of drawing with my right hand to slow myself down even more (I am left handed). I am finding these exercises extremely interesting because I feel like I am getting the perspective down pretty well. I'm also starting to feel like my hand is a little better at following what I'm seeing.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/Picture158Large.jpg
Here are two more contour drawings, again looking at the page when I put the pencil down to start a line and not looking down until the line comes to an end and I have to start a new line.

Good job and fascinating approach. I should try it too. If I'm not mistaking I see already an improvement in your "blind" drawings so keep doing it. Cheers!
Thanks for the encouragement AbuAmir!
I'm onto the next block of Nicolaides' lesson plan, which is part contour drawing part gesture. Here are my first batch of gesture drawings (30-45seconds each).

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/Picture166Large.jpg
While this is keeping me rather busy I think I'm also going to look for another master copy to work on soon.
Another 30 minutes worth of gesture today, I feel that a few of these are showing slight improvement.

Delayed update,
20 minute contour drawing-
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/Picture173Large.jpg
30 minutes of Gesture, I've been using posemaniacs, which is amazing and useful, but does seem to recycle images often. I've drawn some of these poses before, but I think the practice is still useful.

Another 20 minute contour drawing-
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b133/stillzero/Picture172Large.jpg
Another batch of gestures and some quick sketches. I'm starting to explore drawing class options, I feel like I'm treading water and not practicing "smart". The fact that I'm working a schedule that is keeping me from the figure drawing class I was attending has led me to explore other options for progressing. I've been looking at ateliers here in new york and continuing education classes and other life drawing classes as well as ClassicalArtOnline. If anyone out there familiar with New York City has any recommendations I'd love to hear them.

Looking good Tasp. And hey...better to tread water than to drown! We all go through periods where, for one reason or another, we're not able to access our preferred routine practice. During those times those times I think the best (and only) thing to do is just keep drawing and not get discouraged :) Your stuff is looking great.
Also, I meant to comment earlier...I'm really digging your blind contour drawings. I had a great teacher in high school that had us practice those, but sadly I haven't tried it since. I've thought about trying it again tho. I was recently reading a really good biography of Rodin (who was an excellent draftsman in addition to his sculpture) and there was a bit about his art training in 19th century France. Apparently, the teacher that he said he learned the most from was really heavy on the "memory" drawing. He would have his students do blind contour drawings incessantly, and he would also do things like have them go to a museum and stare at a master painting all day, and then go home and try to draw the entire thing from memory. Rodin said that he learned more from these exercises than from anything else. I can see how it would provide great training for observational skills. I'll have to try it! :)
Jabuhrer- Thank you for the encouragement! I am definitely not giving up, just voicing my current concerns that I am on a plateau, skill wise. I'm definitely going to continue to tread water until I learn to swim better. I haven't been posting as of late, I loaned out my camera to a friend last week and just got it back. I have been drawing a little more than usual this last week. Throwing myself into it as it were to help myself get re-motivated. I've been doing a ton of gestural and quick sketching but I don't feel that there's been much progress on that front. So here is another batch of blind contour drawings-

So I've been sketching daily, doing doodles an anatomy work. I haven't produced anything I'm happy with in a while, though I suppose that's a good thing because it will keep me working on it. Here are a few sketches from the last few days, any ideas on how I can fix my problems with proportions would be greatly appreciated. I've been trying do a few quick sketches of my reference before getting started in earnest and using my pencil to try to see how the angles are.
Made the head too big and the arm in the background is also too large in this one. I tried to go ahead and do some shading on it anyway, didn't get to the face-
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_ju-sOObKPdE/THWzodPyfFI/AAAAAAAAAac/GxezFZcIxfA/s576/IMG_0017.JPG
This one is by far the best sketch I've done lately, and it took me 30 minutes to get it to this point. I am going to try and shade it despite the fact that it's still not positioned properly. I'm enjoying china markers, the lack of erasing makes me put down each line with certainty.

Recent master studies from the anatomy series...
I'm definitely going to start laying in lines for the eyes and other major features, I already try to do this, but I'm going to have to start being a lot more careful with it. The eyes on this one are horribly mis-aligned.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_ju-sOObKPdE/TH3UFtDjcRI/AAAAAAAAAa8/DuSrqR4BRzU/s576/IMG_0020.JPG
Another master copy, messed up the neck on this one, still issues with the eye alignment but I feel like I got closer to capturing the feel of this piece than the one above
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_ju-sOObKPdE/TH3T6-D1tsI/AAAAAAAAAa4/Pu3HNskIXuI/s576/IMG_0019.JPG
This last one is a series of practice sketches, before attempting this master copy in earnest. Its from the torso anatomy series. I'm trying to properly catch both the hunched curve of the shoulders as the arm comes across twisting the torso, and the slouch of the shoulder in the foreground being lower than the one we can't see in the background. None of these three properly show the posture, but I feel like the practice is helping me understand the pose more and get closer to what it actually is. I'm going to keep trying this until I get it right.

Hi Andrew :)
I just went through your thread again...Great progress happening..
It looks like you are really getting a nice feel for the tools that you are using to do your studies with, which is half the battle won.
A great sense of flowing energy in the ones posted on the previous page where you say you need to work more on the heads while doing gestures..I really like those alot...and the last one posted is a beautiful drawing..it shows great sensitivity toward the subject, and a clear understanding of overlapping volumes to create a sense of depth and unity of form...Great Job..:applause:
Keep up the great progress Andrew, and above all else,.. Enjoy the journy

I'm back! It's been a long time, mostly due to the fact that I just moved across the country. Now that things are starting to settle back to normal I'm going to be able to start working on my drawing again. Thanks for the encouragement Glenn, it's helpful as always! Here's stuff I did today (I'm rusty, haven't done anything but doodle in the last 4 months...)

Been working in 3d lately trying to teach myself more. This head is turning out pretty well, I haven't looked at any reference. But at this point it's time to go looking for some and try and tweak it so it looks the way I want it. The biggest issue here is that I think everything is pretty good anatomy wise, the issue is that I'm trying to create a female head and this looks decidedly male to me. So, as I said above, time for reference.

Hi, Tasp!
Went through your sketches and progress is really good! I also going to study anatomy and figure drawing, decided to start from drawing basics for now:)

Hello
from what i see you're already start to show some progress, keep pushing forward and it will eventually pay off... at least that's what I'm saying to myself everyday... :D:D
Great work
Thanks for the comments marowak and Madio. I've been really busy lately but I'm hoping to have some new stuff to show in the near future.
Madio- a lot of the studies that I've done that helped me with my figure art are actually in another thread. You can see them here http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=200&t=858687&highlight=anatomy+dojo
You might want to consider drawing from an anatomy book to learn all the bones and muscles it really helps. Good luck!
Pretty much finalized the set up. Last render is about as good as I think it's going to get. I learned a lot doing this.
