View Full Version : What software can model this?

I use SolidEdge which is an engineering solid modeling program. I have modeled all the structural
elements of this product however the white insulation blankets are beyond what SolidEdge can model as it is not a polygon modeler. What I would like to do is import my structural model into some other software which could model the insulation, model it, then export the insulation back to SolidEdge as a single model shape which could be put back on my structure model. The only ones I can think of are Mudbox or Zbrush but have no experience with them. Can they import .stp or .3ds and export the same? Could you build on an imported shape and snap to its surfaces or verticies? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mudbox and ZBrush would be ideal for something like this, but you'd be looking at importing / exporting the model as an .obj file. Also, you'd need to ensure your base mesh was comprised of quadrilateral polygons for subdivision purposes - both programs can clean up meshes with ngons prior to sculpting, however.

In terms of learning curve, they're both quite intuitive, the primary difference being the way in which you navigate the interface - Mudbox is more 'standard' in terms of hotkeys and navigation, whereas ZBrush takes a little while to get used to. They're both very capable programs.

Thanks. I think I will give mud box a try.
