View Full Version : max and .obj files :(

when i export a mesh in max in .obj file format (with pluggins from habware => max2obj obj2max) to uvmap it in uvmapper
(www.uvmapper.com => classic version is free )
and then load the .obj file back in max i get a few problems

-i cant use the uvcoordinates that i ve saved in max from the .obj to the simmular mesh in maxformat

- the .obj file loads in very litlle but the move tools are miles away from the boundingbox witch makes it very hard to deal with (my english isn't that good that i can explain it well )

did some of you guys had simmular probs and how did you get them fixed .
let me and others know
would be really appreciated

The .uvw file from UVW Unwrap is very fragile... it doesn't work well if the vertex order has changed at all. When you exported & imported the OBJ, the vert order probably changed from the original .max model. Not much you can do to fix this.

The scale of the imported OBJ can be modified via the import dialog, if I recall correctly. Or maybe it was just in the export dialog?

Hum, I cannot really help for the problem with the uv-mapping (if you use max 5, to try the unwrapuv modifer, it's excellent) but for the import and export you might make sure you have those options :

When exporting from Max as object :
- make sure vertex scale is set to 1 and #of digit to at least 6
When importing back in Max
- make sure vertex scale is also set to 1 and center pivot isn't checked.

For the uvs I'm a little surprised, I used uvmapper before Max 5 and it worked fine.
