View Full Version : Best animation compression
What is the best compression to use for an animation that I want to put up on the net. I'd like it to be available for as many people as possible.
Thanks...

Mostly i used QT with Sorensen3 and a friend of mine used to make streaming flash movies with this. I have to ask him how he did that because my flash knowledge is somehow lower than the average.
Another thing is then using Squeeze from Sorensen==> small files and good quality.
I would go the QT way or even use that flash thingy with squeeze. Nearly everybody has flash on the net.

I'll agree that QT with Sorenson 3 is a good bet. There's also Sorenson Squeeze, which is a great application for video compression, but a bit expensive.
Also, with a good compressor, mpegs can be good. If you've going for a "non-artist" target audience on PCs, mpegs are the way to go, as not a lot of them will have QT, but they'll all be able to play mpegs. (I speak from experience.) Still, I like QT better and recommend it first.
I don't recommend avi, even divx. I've seen some good stuff with it, but I hear that it doesn't always perform as expected cross-platform. I've used other codecs for avi's (for the PC audience, as above) and had very mixed results. I've just sworn them off completely in favor of mpegs, which I've found I can make smaller with equal quality...

Yep as Iggy said stay away from that avidivx codec stuff.
I always experienced better quality with QT and the Mpeg option is also a good way to handle.

Yeah, Sorenson3 and Mpeg4 seemed pretty good, although Sorenson is a lot bigger than Mpeg4. I eventually chose Mpeg4.
If you're interested in seeing the animation, you can find it here (http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=461922&Start=1&Artist=Kirl&ByArtist=Yes). The link is in the description of the image.
Feel free to leave a comment, here or there, doesn't matter. :)
Thanks for the advice, I'm a real post-processing N00b... :D

Really nice animation, pretty realistic, too! :applause: but, why did you leave it in .ez? Could you have just linked the QT, it was 6.6 meg as opposed to the 5.1 meg .ez.
