I'm having a problem rendering out my transparency maps on polygonal hair. I'm working in Maya and when I render it out in Mental Ray (and in Maya Software with ray tracing on) there's still a bit of the polygon shadow there, as you can see here...

I know almost nothing about rendering and with the mental ray tab, I've left everything at it's default settings, except for the Quality Presets set to Production: Fine Trace. I know the transparency map is exactly black, and exactly white in the right areas and I checked the Alpha is Luminance box. So I need to know if it's my shader, light, or something in the rendering options that would get rid of the excess shadow completely. Anybody with any help with a link to somewhere, or a post that has already been made about this subject, a different way of doing the shadows, (or if I'm posting in the wrong section...) or anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch! :D

Use the "cutout" option in mia_material (arch&design in 3ds max). It may be something with your transparency gamma.

It must be the old material used for hair. Under Raytrace Options make Shadow Attenuation 0( 0.5 is default)
I still don't understand why it's default creating a lot of confusion.
